Dukes Fall at Saint Joseph's

Hopfer scores A-10-leading ninth goal in defeat

PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's (6-8-1, 4-2) scored twice in the second half to pull away for a 3-1 win over Duquesne (6-5-1, 2-2-1) at rainy Sweeney Field in Philadelphia on Saturday evening.

Maxi Hopfer gave the Dukes a 1-0 on his Atlantic 10-leading ninth goal of the season in the 33rd minute.

Hopfer's nine goals are the most by a Duke since Colin Phillips found the back of the net 13 times in 2015.

The Hawks tied it less than one minute later as the two went to the half tied at 1-1.

SJU took the lead on a Garrett Lyons penalty kick in the 64th minute.

The Hawks put it out of reach on Omry Perel's goal in the 77th minute.

Ryan Landry assisted on Hopfer's goal to take sole possession of the team season lead with five.

The loss was DU's first in the past 10 meetings with the Hawks. The defeat also snapped Duquesne's five-match series win streak in Philadelphia.

Hopfer led the Dukes with six shots and Hopfer and Landry had three shots on goal each for DU.

DU keeper Domenic Nascimben had seven saves, which were two shy of his career high.

Duquesne returns to Pittsburgh to begin a stretch of three home matches in eight days against St. Bonaventure on Wed., Oct. 20 at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN+).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nate Dragisich put DU's first shot of the match on goal in the fourth minute.
  • Saint Joe's played a ball into the box off a set piece in the 19th minute, but could not capitalize as the Dukes were able to clear following a scrum in front of the net.
  • Aidan Watkins put a hard shot on net off a set piece in the 29th minute, but DU's Domenic Nascimben was able to leap and punch it over the crossbar.
  • The Dukes capitalized on their advantage in possession when Ryan Landry crossed the ball from right-to-left to Maxi Hopfer, who got a toe on it to put it by SJU's Lars Haavie in the 33rd minute.
  • SJU answered 40 seconds later when Blake Driehuis scored on a well-struck ball from distance to make it 1-1.
  • Logan Muck came off the bench to have a hard shot from inside left of the box blocked in the 41st minute.
  • First half stats were nearly identical with SJU having one more shot (11-10) and the shots on goal even at five each.
  • SJU had the first scoring chance of the second half, rifling a pair of shots from close range that were turned away by Nascimben in the 50th minute.
  • Duquesne had a great chance less than two minutes later when Haavie left the SJU line and Hopfer was unable to get a foot on the ball with only a defender between him and the net.
  • SJU took the lead when Garrett Lyons converted a penalty kick in the 64th minute after DU was whistled for taking down SJU's James Fletcher in the box.
  • The rain, which fell throughout the match, picked up considerably after the Hawks took their 2-1 lead.
  • Logan Muck sent a hard right-footed shot just over the crossbar in the 69th minute.
  • SJU's Alvin Dahn crossed it to Driehuis seconds later, but Driehuis' shot from inside the six was also high.
  • Chris Hunt headed a ball off the crossbar in the 72nd minute as the Hawks continued to pressure the Dukes.
  • Saint Joseph's put it out of reach on an Omry Perel goal in the 77th minute.
  • SJU finished with 22 shots to 18 for DU.
  • The Hawks had two more shots on goal than the Dukes (10-8).
  • There were 30 fouls called in the match (17 on SJU). The Hawks were assessed four yellow cards to one for Duquesne.
