Cold-Shooting Dukes Fall to Davidson

Weathers leads Duquesne with 12 points

McCANDLESS, PA. - Kellan Grady and Carter Collins scored 13 points each to lead Davidson (6-4, 2-1) to a 61-48 win over cold-shooting Duquesne (2-3, 1-2) in the Dukes' home opener at Kerr Fitness Center on the campus of La Roche University.

Marcus Weathers led the Dukes, who shot 28.8 percent, with 12 points.

Duquesne, which was up 26-17 with 4:54 left in the first half, went 4-of-28 - including 4-of-23 in the second half - the rest of the way.

It was the second-worst shooting performance by the Dukes under fourth-year coach Keith Dambrot.

Duquesne used a 9-0 run - with Weathers scoring five - to take an early 21-9 lead.

Davidson, which opened the game 1-of-10, found its range, pulling within one at the half at 26-25 as the Dukes went cold, hitting two of their final 10 shots.

Davidson took its first lead on a Grady layup on its first possession of the second half.

Neither team lead by more than four until Hyunjung Lee hit a 3-pointer to put the Wildcats up 40-33 with 9:14 left. Grant Huffman completed an 11-0 Davidson run with a layup to make it 42-33.

Duquesne would get no closer than seven the rest of the way.

Michael Hughes had nine points and Tavian Dunn-Martin and Sincere Carry added seven points each for the Dukes.

Duquesne will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 9 when it hosts Fordham at 2:00 p.m. at La Roche University in a game that will be televised nationally by NBCSN.

NOTES
  • This was DU's worst shooting performance since a Dambrot Era low 28.3 percent (15-of-53) effort in a 68-47 loss at St. Bonaventure on Feb. 27, 2019.
  • The loss ended Duquesne's 18-game win streak when holding opponents under 70 points (the last loss was the St. Bonaventure game listed above).
  • Duquesne, which went 10-of-23 from the foul line in Sunday's 75-73 loss at George Washington, continued to struggle from the stripe, going 12-of-21.
  • Junior guard Lamar Norman Jr. has decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal and was not in uniform for the game. Norman Jr. played in 61 of a possible 66 games at Duquesne (5.4 ppg. career scoring average & 74 career 3-pointers). The Grand Rapids, Mich. native had a streak of 42 consecutive games played, including 22-straight starts.
  • Duquesne's largest lead was 12, the last of which came at 24-12 with 6:50 left in the first half ... Davidson's largest lead was the 13-point final margin ... there was one tie and three lead changes before Davidson took the lead for good on a Hyunjung Lee basket that made it 35-33 with 12:17 left ... Duquesne led for 20:21 ... Davidson led for 18:38.
