DAYTON, OHIO - Dayton held Duquesne to 33 percent shooting in the second half to erase a one-point DU halftime lead in defeating the Dukes 72-63 at UD Arena.
Marcus Weathers led Duquesne (3-4, 2-3) with 19 points.
Tavian Dunn-Martin and
Andre Harris added eight points each for the Dukes who shot 40 percent for the game.
Ibi Watson and Jalen Crutcher led Dayton (7-3, 3-2), which shot 43 percent, with 19 and 18 points respectively.
The Flyers did most of their damage from the 3-point arc, going 10-of-24, while Duquesne, which hit two of its first three 3-point attempts - both by Weathers - finished 3-of-17 from long distance.
There were two ties and seven lead changes in a first half that ended with the Dukes up 34-33. Weathers, who had 12 in the opening 20 minutes, scored Duquesne's first 10 points in helping the Dukes to an early 16-7 lead. Neither team led by more than three over the final 11 minutes of the half.
Watson hit a pair of 3-pointers early out of the break to help Dayton build a 44-36 lead as the Dukes hit two of their first 12 shots.
The Flyers extended their lead to 59-41 on the strength of five 3-pointers as the Dukes managed just three field goals in the first ten-plus minutes of the second half.
Weathers ended a 15-1 Dayton run with a basket that made it 59-43 with 9:06 left.
The Dukes cut it to 65-55 on a
Tyson Acuff steal and layup with 2:31 remaining and pulled to within eight on a
Chad Baker dunk with 1:20 to go, but couldn't overcome their slow second-half start.
Duquesne will return to Pittsburgh late tonight before heading to Olean, N.Y. to face St. Bonaventure (5-1, 3-1) on Friday, Jan. 15 on ESPN2. The St. Bonaventure game was moved from its original Jan. 16 date earlier this week.
