Dukes Fall to Fordham in Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals

DAYTON, Ohio – In a defensive battle at UD Arena, the sixth seed Duquesne Dukes fell to defending Atlantic 10 champion and three seed Fordham, 54-47, on Friday night in the Atlantic 10 Championship Quarterfinal round.

Paige Cannon and Amanda Kalin each posted 13 points, while Laia Sole added nine. Libby Bazelak stuffed the stat sheet with six points, 11 rebounds, five assists and a block.

The Dukes (20-11) were limited to 19-58 shooting (32.8%) on its field goal attempts, while Fordham did not fare much better, recording 18 field goals on 54 attempts. The Rams (21-10) made 13-of-16 attempts from the free throw line, while the Dukes sank 6-of-7 from the charity stripe.

FIRST QUARTER

  • Laia Sole led the Dukes with five points during the opening quarter.
  • Both teams combined to shoot 9-28 in the quarter.
  • Neither team led by more than five points.

SECOND QUARTER

  • Duquesne grabbed a 19-15 lead after an 8-0 run, but the Rams closed the first half on a 9-0 sprint to take a 24-19 advantage into the locker room.
THIRD QUARTER
  • Fordham increased its advantage to seven points at 30-23 and 35-25, but the Dukes sliced the deficit to just three points after a Kalin layup and Precious Johnson jumper.
  • A trey from Fordham lifted the Rams to a six-point lead at the end of three quarters.  
FOURTH QUARTER
  • The Dukes got as close as four points at 41-37, 43-39 and 49-45 with under a minute remaining, but Fordham sunk 9-of-10 free throws in the final period to seal the victory.
NOTES
  • Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Bre Cavanaugh led the Rams with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
  • The 2019-20 season marks the 10th time over the past 12 seasons that the Dukes posted a 20-win season.
  • Duquesne leads the all-time series by a mark of 22-10.
  • Fordham now leads the A-10 Championship series by a margin of 3-1.
  • The Dukes led 40-37 off the glass.
