OLEAN, N.Y. – Led by a balanced offense, the Duquesne women's basketball team dominated St. Bonaventure in a 80-57 victory in the regular season finale at the Reilly Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Dukes (9-7) have earned the sixth seed in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Championships and will host 11th seed Rhode Island in the first round on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at La Roche University's Kerr Fitness Center. For the full bracket, click here
The Dukes complete the regular season with a 19-10, 9-7 record, while St. Bonaventure falls to 7-22, 4-12.
Six players scored between 13 and 9 points in the winning effort, led by Libby Bazelak's baker's dozen 13 points. Nina Aho posted 12 points, while Laia Solé posted her second career double-double with 11-points and 10 rebounds.
Paige Cannon, Precious Johnson and Amanda Kalin all registered nine points in the outing. Bazelak grabbed five rebounds and dished five assists to stuff the stat sheet. Solé distributed four dimes in the contest.
The Dukes found success from 3-point land, draining 12 triples on 23 attempts. Six different Dukes registered a 3-pointer, led by Kalin's three treys.
FIRST QUARTER
- The hard-fought first quarter ended with Duquesne leading 25-21.
- St. Bonaventure led 17-14 with 3:25 left in the half, but the Dukes finished the quarter on an 11-4 run to retake the lead.
- Kalin posted all nine of her points in the opening quarter, as the Dukes shot 10-15 (66.7%) from the field and 5-6 (83.3%) from 3-point land.
SECOND QUARTER
- Duquesne kept momentum with a Bazelak triple and a free throw from Solé to take a 29-21 advantage.
- The Bonnies cut the deficit to just two points at 29-27, but Duquesne would respond with an 10-2 run, leading 39-29.
- The Dukes would head to the locker room with a 43-33 advantage.
- Bazelak posted 11 of her 13 points in the second quarter alone.
THIRD QUARTER
- Duquesne outscored St. Bonaventure 22-12 in third quarter, extending its lead as high as 21 points at 56-37.
- Nina Aho led the way with eight points in the period.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Duquesne enlarged its lead to a game-high 28 points at 80-52, with the Bonnies scoring the final five points of the game for the final score of 80-57.
- Amaya Hamilton posted six points in the final quarter.
- 12 of Duquesne's 15 points came inside the paint during the final 10 minutes.
NOTES
- The Dukes totaled double-digit 3-pointers for the sixth game this season. They were two triples away from matching the school-record, which was tied earlier this season against Akron.
- Duquesne's had just six turnovers, its lowest output of the season and the fewest since totaling five turnovers against Youngstown State on March 19, 2015 in the first round of the WNIT.
- Duquesne has defeated St. Bonaventure each of the past seven meetings, earning sweeps each of the past three seasons. The Dukes now lead the all-time series by a mark of 41-20
