PITTSBURGH -
Marcus Weathers scored a game-high 18 points and
Sincere Carry added 10 points and a career high-tying nine assists, as Duquesne held on to defeat La Salle, 71-69, at PPG Paints Arena.
Tavian Dunn-Martin (12 points) hit four 3-pointers and
Lamar Norman Jr. (12 points) added three from beyond the arc for the Dukes who shot 51 percent in snapping a three-game losing streak.
Duquesne got four 3-pointers, including two from Dunn-Martin and one from Norman Jr., in the first 12:27 of the second half to take its largest lead at 60-48.
La Salle cut it to five on a pair of free throws, before Carry beat the Explorers press and found Weathers for a fast break dunk to make it 69-62 with 2:49 left.
Weathers then found
Michael Hughes for a layup to up the lead to nine. Saul Phiri answered with a 3-pointer and Ed Croswell converted a three-point play with 44 seconds left to make it 71-68.
Duquesne turned it over on back-to-back possessions, giving the Explorers the ball down three with 16.6 seconds on the clock.
La Salle's Brandon Stone missed an open 3-point attempt from the wing. The Explorers grabbed the rebound and Beatty was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 1.1 seconds left.
Beatty made the first, missed the second and his intentional miss on the third was corralled by Duquesne's
Maceo Austin at the horn.
The Dukes, behind Weathers' 8-of-10 shooting, outscored La Salle 36-16 in the paint. Duquesne, which held La Salle to 39 percent shooting, was outrebounded 40-31. The Explorers turned 19 offensive boards into 22 second chance points.
Duquesne heads to St. Louis, Mo. to face the Saint Louis Billikens (17-5, 6-3) on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 7:00 p.m. ET (ESPN+). The Dukes and Billikens are among five teams currently tied for third in the A-10.
NOTES
- This was Duquesne's third-straight win over the Explorers in Pittsburgh. La Salle has won the past five meetings in Philadelphia.
- Duquesne's 16-5 record is the program's best since 2010-11 (also 16-5).
- Sincere Carry tied his career high with nine assists.
- DU assisted on 19 of its 28 field goals. The 19 assists were the most since 20 in the win over Radford on Dec. 14 (a span of 12 games).
- Baylee Steele came off the bench to contribute nine points and eight rebounds in 24 minutes.
- Lamar Norman Jr. went 3-of-6 from the arc in scoring 12 points. It was his third double-digit scoring game of the season.
- La Salle's largest lead was three at 15-12 at with 11:33 left in the first half ... Duquesne's largest lead was 12 at 60-48 with 5:58 left ... there were five ties and four lead changes before a Tavian Dunn-Martin gave the lead for good on a 3-pointer that made it 22-21 with 8:15 left in the first half ... La Salle led for 43 seconds ... Duquesne led for 34:26.
