Marcus Weathers tied his career high with 26 points and
Sincere Carry added 14 points and eight assists as Duquesne (17-5, 7-3) completed a regular-season sweep of Saint Louis with an 82-68 win over the Billikens at Chaifetz Arena.
The 14-point margin of victory was DU's largest ever over the Billikens in St. Louis.
Michael Hughes had 11 points, nine rebounds, a career high five steals and three blocks and
Baylee Steele added 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench for the Dukes who outrebounded the Billikens 40-30.
With the win, Duquesne has its best 22-game record since going 18-4 in 1971-72. This is the fourth time in 43 Atlantic 10 seasons that the Dukes have seven wins in 10 A-10 games.
Saint Louis, whose two previous home losses came at the hands of #6 (AP) Dayton and #12 (AP) Seton Hall, dropped to 17-6 and 6-4 in the Atlantic 10.
The Dukes held the Billikens scoreless for over four minutes in taking a 31-21 lead.
Saint Louis cut it to six on a pair of Tay Weaver 3-pointers before Carry, who tied his career high with four 3-pointers, added a pair of treys in the final 1:14 to give Duquesne a 40-32 halftime lead.
Weathers had 16 at the half for DU.
SLU put together an 8-0 run to cut it two before Hughes hit a 3-pointer to make it 53-48.
Hughes' bucket started a 12-2 Dukes run that included a
Lamar Norman Jr. three-point play and ended with a Weathers dunk that made it 62-50 with under 12 minutes left.
DU added a 10-2 run that included 3-pointers from Carry and Norman Jr. to take a 74-58 lead.
SLU got not closer than 12 the rest of the way.
Duquesne returns to Pittsburgh to face St. Bonaventure (15-8, 7-3) in DU's 11th Chuck Cooper Classic game on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 3:00 p.m. at Robert Morris's UPMC Events Center. The game will be televised nationally by NBCSN.
NOTES
- The win gives the Dukes (17-5) their best 22-game record since 1971-72 (18-4).
- This is the fourth time in 43 seasons that DU has seven wins in its first 10 Atlantic 10 games (1980, 1981 & 2011 are the others).
- This was Duquesne's second series sweep in 11 home-and-home meetings with the Billikens (SLU has also swept twice, the two have split seven times).
- The win ended a three-game losing streak at Chaifetz Arena for the Dukes (last win at SLU was Jan. 30, 2016 by a 78-67 score).
- Weathers' 26 points tied his career high set on Jan. 2 vs. Saint Louis in Pittsburgh. The junior forward tied his career high for free throws made and attempted (11-of-13). Weathers, who had three traditional three-point plays to up his season total to 16, drew nine Billikens fouls.
- Carry finished 4-of-6 from the arc in tying his career high for makes set earlier this season at UMass. Carry added eight assists without a turnover, giving him 17 assists in DU's past two games.
- Michael Hughes' five steals were a career high.
- Baylee Steele came off the bench to score 10 points and grab seven rebounds in 21 minutes. It was his first double-digit scoring game since he had 12 points at Saint Joseph's on Jan. 8 (a span of seven games).
- The Dukes assisted on 17 of their 27 field goals.
- Saint Louis's largest lead was four at 7-3 at with 14:33 left in the first half ... Duquesne's largest lead was 16 at 74-58 with 4:34 left ... there were four ties and seven lead changes before a Marcus Weathers gave DU the lead for good on a layup that made it 20-18 with 8:03 left in the first half ... Saint Louis led for 5:46 ... Duquesne led for 30:05.
