PITTSBURGH - Duquesne, down 14 with just over five minutes left, pulled to within two with 35 seconds remaining, but could not close the gap in falling to George Washington, 70-67, at PPG Paints Arena.
Maceo Jack scored a game-high 20 points and Arnaldo Toro added 16 points and 14 rebounds for George Washington (12-14, 6-7), which snapped a five-game series losing streak.
The loss dropped Duquesne to 18-7 overall and 8-5 in Atlantic 10 play.
Marcus Weathers and
Sincere Carry, who finished with 19 and 17 points respectively, combined for 26 of DU's 35 second-half points, but their efforts couldn't negate the team's 5-of-24 performance from the 3-point arc.
Duquesne forced six GW turnovers in mounting its late-game 18-6 run, but saw a Carry 3-point attempt rim out with the score at 69-66 with 24 seconds left.
Weathers and Carry combined for 15 of the 18 points during the run.
Weathers was fouled with three seconds left and made one free throw, making it 69-67, before missing the second intentionally.
Toro was able to track down the rebound and hit one free throw with two seconds left for the final margin.
DU had a nine-point lead early, before GW went on a 24-7 run to go up 31-23 at the 4:06 mark. Carry and
Tavian Dunn-Martin buried 3-pointers to cut it to 35-32 at intermission. DU went 3-of-15 from the arc in the opening 20 minutes.
Duquesne hit just five of its first 18 shots of the second half, as GW built its lead to 54-42.
Carry hit back-to-back baskets to make it 56-48 before Jack and Jamison Battle answered with 3-pointers to make it 62-48 with 5:05 to go.
It was then that Duquesne began its run with a Weathers dunk.
George Washington shot 48.1 percent from the field, including 9-of-20 from the 3-point arc.
Duquesne finished at 39.7 percent.
Duquesne begins a stretch of four games in 11 days - including three on the road - when it heads to Ohio to face No. 5 (AP) Dayton (24-2, 13-0) on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2:00 p.m. (Stadium).
