Dukes Come up Short at #5 Dayton

Carry leads four in double figures with 21

DAYTON, OHIO - Jalen Crutcher scored all 17 of his points in the second half, and Obi Toppin added 28 points, to lead #5 (AP) Dayton (25-2, 14-0) to an 80-70 win over Duquesne (18-8, 8-6) at UD Arena.

Sincere Carry led Duquesne, which led 38-36 at the half, with 21 points. Marcus Weathers had 17 points and Baylee Steele added 17 points off the bench for the Dukes.

Crutcher, who was held scoreless for the first 25 minutes, hit a jumper and 3-pointer to give the Flyers a 48-42 lead. Crutcher's bucket started a 19-5 run that gave UD a 62-47 lead with 10:14 left.

Crutcher, who went 0-of-2 from the field in the first half, scored the first 11 points of the run, with Toppin chipping in the last five.

The Dayton lead reached 66-49 with just under nine minutes left, as Duquesne hit just five of its first 15 shots and turned it over three times out of the break.

DU rallied to pull within nine on Steele's third - and final - 3-pointer with 4:18 left. Steele cut the lead to 74-66 with 1:34 to go, but the Dukes would get no closer as Dayton hit six free throws down the stretch to seal it.

There were 12 ties and six lead changes - with neither team leading by more than four - in a first half that ended with Duquesne up 38-36.

Dayton shot 50.9 percent to 48.3 percent for Duquesne. The two teams had six 3-pointers each, with Toppin matching Steele's three.

DU, which had one more field goal than UD, was outscored 20-8 from the foul line.

Duquesne, in the midst of a four-games-in-11-day stretch, travels to Olean, N.Y. to take on St. Bonaventure on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 7:00 p.m. (Stadium).

NOTES
  • With his basket at the 12:02 mark of the second half, junior Marcus Weathers reached the 1,000 career point mark. Weathers, who had 17 points and six rebounds, scored 310 points as a freshman at Miami, Ohio. He has 693 in two seasons at Duquesne.
  • Sincere Carry finished with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting. It was his third 20-point game of the season and most since his season-high 23 points in the season opener vs. Princeton. Carry also had six assists (with one turnover) and a pair of steals.
  • Baylee Steele came off the bench to score 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Steele went 3-of-4 from the 3-point arc in posting his highest point total since his career-high 20 vs. Indiana State at the Junkanoo Jam on Nov. 21.
  • Duquesne led 38-36 at the break. It was just the second time - and first time at home - that Dayton trailed at the half this season.
  • Dayton's largest lead was 17 at 66-49 with 7:02 left ... Duquesne's largest lead was four the last of which came at 38-34 with one second left in the first half ... there were 14 ties and seven lead changes before Obi Toppin gave UD the lead for good at 41-40 on a free throw with 16:24 left ... Dayton led for 19:18 ... Duquesne led for 10:54.
