Dukes Grind One Out on the Road

Complete season sweep of Fordham with 59-54 win

BRONX, NY - Lamar Norman Jr. scored all 11 of his points in the second half and Tavian Dunn-Martin hit four big free throws down the stretch to lead Duquesne (18-6, 8-4) to a 59-54 road win over Fordham (7-17, 1-11).

The victory was DU's fifth-straight win at Rose Hill Gym and ninth in the past 11 meetings with Fordham.

Dunn-Martin, who finished with a team-high 15 points, converted a pair of one-and-ones after the Rams cut it to three twice in the final 28 seconds.

Sincere Carry had eight assists and Marcus Weathers added nine points and a career-high 14 rebounds for the Dukes who tied the school record for Atlantic 10 road wins with four.

Norman Jr. hit a pair of 3-pointers early in the second half to give the Dukes a 34-29 lead.

Duquesne was up five before Antwon Portley scored six in a row, the last four coming on a 3-pointer and free throw, to give the Rams a 39-38 lead with 10:36 left.

Fordham completed a 12-3 run to take a 45-41 lead on a Josh Colon 3-pointer with just under eight minutes remaining.

Carry scored late in the shot clock, then found Norman Jr. for his third 3-pointer of the half to give the Dukes a 55-49 lead with just over two minutes left.

Fordham's Ty Perry hit a 3-pointer to make it 55-52 with 28 seconds left, before Dunn-Martin answered with two free throws.

Perry once again made it a three-point game on a bucket with 19 seconds to go, before Dunn-Martin stepped to the stripe to hit two more to seal the win.

There were seven ties and seven lead changes in the first half that ended with the Dukes up 27-25. Baylee Steele, who finished with 13 points off the bench, had a game-high 11 at intermission.

Duquesne, which finished 7-of-32 from 3-point, was 2-of-17 from the arc in the first half.

The Dukes, who shot 37.7 percent, held the Rams to 34.6 percent from the field.

Duquesne returns home to face George Washington (11-14, 5-7) on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at PPG Paints Arena at 8:00 pm. The DU/GW game will be preceded by the Duquesne women vs. Rhode Island at 5:30. Both games will be streamed live on ESPN+.

NOTES
  • The win gives Duquesne its best overall record since 1971-72 (19-5 through 24 g. that year).
  • This is the third time in 43 seasons that DU has at least eight wins in 12 A-10 games (1981 & 2011, both 9-3, are the others).
  • The Dukes have tied the school record for A-10 road wins (4) accomplished four times (2019 last).
  • This was DU's fifth-straight win at Rose Hill Gym and ninth in the past 11 meetings with Fordham.
  • Duquesne was without freshman guard Maceo Austin, who was not in uniform (sick). Austin had started DU's 23 previous games.
  • The was the third-straight double-digit scoring game for Baylee Steele, who scored 11 of his 13 points in the first half. This is the first time Steele has scored in double digits in three-straight games this season.
  • Marcus Weathers' 14 rebounds were one more than his previous career high set earlier this season vs. Radford and tied vs. Marshall.
  • This was Sincere Carry's fourth-straight game with eight or more assists.
  • Fordham's largest lead was six at 13-7 at with 12:29 left in the first half ... Duquesne's largest lead was six at 55-49 with 0:29 left ... there were nine ties and 13 lead changes before Tavian Dunn-Martin gave the Dukes the lead for good at 48-45 on a 3-pointer with 5:27 left ... Fordham led for 16:26 ... Duquesne led for 17:30.
