PITTSBURGH - Maddie Hart tallied five goals to pace the Duquesne lacrosse team to an 11-10 victory over visiting Canisius in the Dukes' home opener on Wednesday afternoon at Arthur J. Rooney Field.
Hart also recorded game highs of eight draw controls, six ground balls and six caused turnovers for Duquesne, which evened its record at 1-1 on the year. The Golden Griffins dropped to 0-2 with the loss.
Tina St. Clair netted a pair of goals while
Elizabeth Petrosky scored a goal to go with a pair of assists on the afternoon.
Maggie Flynn and
Alana Piano each tallied four caused turnovers and four ground balls for the Dukes.
After Canisius got on the board first, Duquesne responded with four straight goals, including a pair from Hart to take a 4-1 lead. The Golden Griffins would answer with four of the next five scores to knot the score at 5-5 with 1:39 to go in the first half.
Petrosky found St. Clair for her second goal of the day to put the Dukes on top 6-5 with just 14 ticks remaining in the opening frame.
Duquesne came out hot in the second half, as Hart scored a pair of goals just 11 seconds apart to extend the Dukes' advantage to 8-5.
The two teams traded goals and Duquesne held that three-goal edge at 11-8 following a Petrosky score with just over 12 minutes to play.
Canisius countered with two consecutive goals, the last coming with 1:01 showing on the clock, but the Dukes were able to run out the clock and secure the one-goal triumph on their home turf.
Six different Dukes found the back of the net in the contest, including Hart, St. Clair, Petrosky,
Rilee Bradshaw,
Carlee Braverman and
Michaela Connolly.
Marissa Malvoso led the Golden Griffins with a hat trick while Katie Smolensky dished out a pair of assists.
