Dukes Drop Overtime Thriller at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. – Four scorers reached double-figures, but the Duquesne women's basketball team could not fend off late Richmond momentum, falling to the Spiders, 67-64 in overtime on Wednesday night at the Robbins Center. The Dukes' (16-8, 6-5) four-game winning streak was snapped, while the Spiders (12-13, 5-6) have won three of its last four and five of its last seven contests.

Paige Cannon led the squad in both scoring and rebounding in a double-double performance, with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The double-double was the sixth of her career and second this season.

Joining Cannon in double-figures were Libby Bazelak, Laia Sole and Amanda Kalin who all registered 10 points. Amaya Hamilton (9) and Nina Aho (8) also contributed on the offensive end.

Aho stuffed the stat sheet with eight rebounds and four assists, while Sole grabbed seven caroms.

FIRST QUARTER

  • Duquesne began the contest on a 10-0 run, before two quick buckets from Richmond made it a 10-4 contest with 3:21 left.
  • Cannon halted the Spiders' momentum with her second on two 3-pointers in the opening quarter.
  • Richmond would get as close as six points at 13-7, but the Dukes would head to the second quarter up double digits at 18-7.
  • Cannon's nine points in the first led the Dukes, as she made three of five attempted triples.
  • The Dukes allowed just three field goals in the first, with the Spiders shooting 3-of-9 from the floor.

SECOND QUARTER

  • Richmond outscored Duquesne 19-16 in the second, as Richmond's offense began to click, shooting over 50 percent (8-15).
  • With Duquesne leading 22-9, the Spiders would cut the deficit to as low as six at 32-26, before Sole ended the half with a pair of free throws to extend the Dukes' lead to eight at 34-26.
  • Sole led Duquesne with six points in the second, as the Dukes' drained 45 percent (5-11) of its shots from the field and 6-of-7 attempts from the stripe.
  • THIRD QUARTER
  • After Richmond began the third quarter with a triple to make it a five-point game, but the Dukes fired off a 6-0 sprint to grab another double-digit lead at 40-29.
  • The Spiders did not back down, finishing the quarter on a 11-2 surge, with Duquesne clinging to a one-point lead at 42-41.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • The Spiders grabbed its first lead of the game with their first field goal of the fourt, but Aho quickly gave the Dukes back the lead after a layup on the next possession.
  • With the score tied at 46-46, the two teams would trade points, as the Dukes would take a 3-point lead after two free throws from Hamilton with 4:47 left in regulation.
  • A Spider trey knotted up the score at 51-51, but Sole would convert a jumper in the low post to take a 53-51 lead with 3:35 to go.
  • A Richmond layup with 1:35 tied the game and wrapped up the scoring, as both teams had empty possessions to end the fourth quarter.

OVERTIME

  • As the shot clock buzzer sounded, Bazelak connected on a runner to lift Duquesne to a 55-53 advantage.
  • Richmond took the lead with a triple, but Hamilton sunk two free throws to give the Dukes back the edge on the scoreboard at 57-56.
  • The teams would trade points, but Richmond would not relinquish the lead after taking a 60-59 advantage with 2:45 left.
  • Hamilton drilled a 3-pointer with 21 seconds left to cut the Duquesne deficit to just a single point at 66-65.
  • After Richmond converted both free throws with just over three seconds remaining, Duquesne threw up a shot at the buzzer, but the shot went wide, as Richmond pulled off the victory.

NOTES

  • Amanda Kalin surpassed 500 career points with her first bucket, a 3-pointer. She is the fourth Duke to pass that threshold this season (Bazelak, Cannon and Sole).
  • Richmond now leads the all-time series 13-12, snapping a seven-game losing skid to Duquesne.
  • Duquesne made 83.3 percent of its attempts from the stripe (15-18), compared to 52.9 percent from the Spiders (9-17).
  • The Dukes out-rebounded Richmond, 45-43.

UP NEXT

  • Duquesne heads to Davidson on Sunday afternoon (1:00 p.m. tip).
  • The Dukes will then begin a three-game homestead to complete the regular season home schedule on Wednesday, Feb. 19 against Rhode Island at PPG Paints Arena.
