Dukes Move to 2-0 in Atlantic 10 Play

Four in double digits help DU down Davidson

MOON TOWNSHIP, PA. - Sincere Carry scored 14 of his 16 points in the final 7:35 to help Duquesne (12-2, 2-0) hold off Davidson (6-7, 0-1), 71-64, in an Atlantic 10 match-up at UPMC Events Center.

It was the seventh-consecutive home victory for the Dukes, who moved to 12-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play for just the eighth time in 43 A-10 seasons. The 12-2 start is the program's best since the 1971-72 team opened 15-2.

Michael Hughes added 14 points and 13 rebounds and Maceo Austin chipped in with 14 points in helping the Dukes to their first win in the eight-game all-time series.

Duquesne, which led by 10 with just over 17 minutes left saw Davidson, which hit eight of its 10 3-pointers in the second half, tie it on a Kellan Grady 3-pointer at the 10:15 mark.

The Dukes were up two before Carry hit a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer to make it a seven-point game.

Carter Collins, who led Davidson with 22 points, converted a three-point play to make it 54-51 with 5:48 left.

The Wildcats got another 3-pointer from Grady to make it a one-point game.

Lamar Norman Jr. buried a corner 3-pointer off a pass from Carry to make it 60-56, before Carry followed with a drive to give DU a six-point lead with 2:41 to go.

Austin then hit a 3-pointer to up the lead to nine with just under two minutes left.

Davidson would get no closer than the seven-point final margin,

Duquesne was hot early in jumping out to a 20-7 lead. The Wildcats briefly cut it to seven before Hughes scored in the paint, then found a cutting Baylee Steele for a layup that made it 24-13.

Davidson's Mike Jones converted a pair of 3-pointers, before Tavian Dunn-Martin hit a floater from the baseline at the first half horn to make it 30-21.

The Dukes outshot the Wildcats 46.4 percent to 29.6 percent in the opening 20 minutes.

For the game, Duquesne shot 49.1 percent to 38.7 percent for Davidson.

DU, led by five assists from Carry, assisted on 18 of its 26 field goals.

Duquesne begins a stretch of four-of-five on the road when it heads to Philadelphia to face Saint Joseph's on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN+).

  • DU's 12-2 start is the school's best since 1971-72 (15-2).
  • This is the eighth time in 43 Atlantic 10 seasons that the Dukes have opened conference play 2-0.
  • This was Duquesne's first series win, ending a streak of seven consecutive Davidson victories.
  • It was the seventh career double-double - and fourth this season - for Hughes who finished with 14 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks. Hughes's 13 rebounds were one shy of his career high.
  • DU finished with four double-digit scorers: Sincere Carry (16), Maceo Austin (14), Michael Hughes (14) and Marcus Weathers (13).
  • Duquesne, which never trailed, took its largest lead at 18-4 ... there were two ties ... Duquesne led for 38:21.
