Marcus Weathers eclipsed his career scoring high for the second time in as many games with 26 points and
Tavian Dunn-Martin, the reigning Atlantic 10 Sixth Man of the Year, came off the bench to add 21 points, including five 3-pointers, in leading Duquesne to a 73-59 A-10-opening win over Saint Louis at UPMC Events Center.
Duquesne, which held SLU to 36.5 percent shooting, shot 65 percent in outscoring the Billikens 45-34 in the second half.
Michael Hughes led the defensive charge with a career high-tying seven blocks.
It was the Dukes' (11-2) sixth-straight home win over the Billikens, who entered the game 11-2.
Neither team led by more than five in a first half that ended with the Dukes up 28-25. Dunn-Martin hit three 3-pointers in scoring 10 for DU in the opening 20 minutes.
The Dukes hit three of their first four shots of the second half to take a 35-27 lead. Weathers was the catalyst with a 3-pointer and a bucket in the first 2:38.
Duquesne, which limited SLU to 2-of-13 shooting to open the half, took a 44-31 lead on Dunn-Martin's fourth 3-pointer with 13:33 left. Hughes blocked five shots in the first 3:38 to ignite the Dukes.
Duquesne was up 47-34 before Saint Louis mounted a 6-0 run to cut it to seven at the 11 minute mark. DU went without a field goal for over three minutes as the Billikens made it 52-48.
Carry ended the Duquesne drought with a jumper with 6:24 left.
Dunn-Martin and
Baylee Steele then hit back-to-back 3-pointers to up the lead to 10.
Maceo Austin's 3-pointer with 1:42 left made it 69-57, essentially putting the game out of reach.
Carry had a game-high eight assists to go along with 12 points and three steals for the Dukes, who shot 45.8 percent for the game.
Duquesne hosts Davidson on Sunday, Jan. 5 at 2:00 p.m. at UPMC Events Center. The game will be televised nationally by NBCSN.
NOTES
- DU has now won the past six series meetings in Pittsburgh. SLU's last regular-season win at Duquesne was on Jan. 22, 2014 when the No. 19 (AP) Billikens defeated the Dukes 76-72. DU now leads the overall series 16-15.
- Duquesne is 2-1 in Atlantic 10 openers under Keith Dambrot.
- Weathers, who scored a career-high 25 points vs. Marshall on Sunday, topped that mark with his 26 points tonight. Weathers has led DU in scoring in each of the past five games. He is shooting .736 (39-of-53) over that span.
- Hughes' seven blocks tied his career high set last year at George Washington.
- Sophomore Lamar Norman Jr. made his fourth career start - and first this season in place of Tavian Dunn-Martin, who started the first 12 games of the season.
- Dunn-Martin, the 2019 Atlantic 10 Sixth Man of the Year, came off the bench to score 21 points on 5-of-10 3-point shooting.
- Saint Louis's largest lead was five, the last of which came at 13-8 at with 10:23 left in the first half ...
