Dukes Drop Matches to Ohio State, No. 10 Pitt to Close ChampYinz Invitational

PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne volleyball team (2-4) completed the ChampYinz Invitational on Saturday, falling to two formidable foes in Ohio State and No. 10 Pitt in straight-sets at Fitzgerald Field House.

Summer Slade and Maria Mosbacher both tallied 17 kills on the day to lead the Dukes.

The Dukes are back in action on Tuesday night at Robert Morris. The match is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. in Moon City.

HOW IT HAPPENED VS. OHIO STATE
  • OSU raced to a 16-5 sprint early on in the first set. The Dukes could not comeback from the deficit, falling behind 1-0.
  • The second set was tightly fought. With the Buckeyes leading 13-9, the Dukes ripped off a 5-1 run to take a 15-14 advantage. The run featured two Mosbacher kills. The two teams would trade points, as OSU would take a 23-20 advantage. Duquesne would cut the deficit to 24-23, but a Duke attack error on set point would give the Buckeyes the second set of the match.
  • With the third set tied at 7-7, the Buckeyes would earn six of the next seven points to take a 13-8 lead. Duquesne cut the deficit to  17-14, but OSU would go on another run, reaching match point at 24-17. A Liz Wayne kill and Summer Slade ace would extend the contest, but OSU would tally a kill on the next play to take the match.
  • Slade and Mosbacher each tallied nine kills against the Buckeyes.
  • Hailey Poling led the way with 12 assists for Duquesne.
  • Claire Boe posted 12 digs, reaching double-figures in the first five matches this season.
