Wayne Records 500th Career Kill in Loss at Robert Morris

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Both Liz Wayne and Summer Slade registered double-digit kills, but undefeated Robert Morris (7-0) defeated Duquesne (2-5) 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-18) on Tuesday night at the UPMC Events Center.

Wayne recorded her 500th career kill with her 10th of 11 total kills on the night. Summer Slade also tallied 11 kills for the Dukes, while Morgan Kelly connected on eight kills to lead the team offensively.

Dani Suiter posted 25 assists, while Hailey Poling added 11. Claire Boe earned 11 digs, her sixth double-digit mark in seven games this season.

The Dukes will remain in the Keystone State this weekend, heading to the historic Palestra in Philadelphia to face Chicago State, Penn and St. Francis Brooklyn at the Valley Forge Sports Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Colonials began the contest on a 6-1 sprint in the first set, before the Dukes could get their second point on the scoreboard. Duquesne rallied with an impressive 12-7 run, to tie set at 13-13. RMU gained control with a 7-3 stretch, earning a five-point advantage at 21-16. The Dukes came within three points of the Colonials at 21-18, 23-20 and 24-21, but a kill on set point gave RMU a 25-21 set one victory.
  • After RMU earned four of five points to begin the set, Duquesne would come within a point of the Colonials at 6-5. RMU would take a four-point lead at 10-6, on its way to a 13-8 advantage. The Dukes would string together a very impressive 6-0 run, to take a one-point lead at 14-13. After a RMU timeout, the Colonials sprinted ahead on an 8-2 scoring streak, taking a 21-16 lead. The Dukes would earn five of the final eight points, but the Colonials reached the 25-point mark with a kill on set point at 25-21.
  • RMU earned eight of 10 points to begin the third set, to force an early Duquesne timeout. The Dukes fell behind 21-11, before rallying to cut the deficit to six at 23-17. The Colonials would go on to win a 25-18 third set to earn its seventh victory of the season.  
  • Wayne connected successfully on .474 of her attempts, while Slade earned a hitting percentage of .391. The duo each only posted two attack errors each.
  • The Dukes posted hitting percentages of .345 in the first set and .370 in the final set.
  • Duquesne led 37-34 in digs.
  • The Dukes now lead 34-8 in the all-time series. The loss snapped an 11-game winning streak over the Colonials.
  • As of Tuesday night, Duquesne's five opponents that its fallen to in 2019 have combined for a 28-5 record, including undefeated No. 6 Pitt and Robert Morris.
