PITTSBURGH – In the first-ever volleyball match at PPG Paints Arena, the Duquesne women's volleyball team (2-2) fell to undefeated Green Bay (5-0) in a thrilling five-set match (22-25, 25-20, 25-21, 15-25, 10-15) to open day one of the ChampYinz Volleyball Invitational.
In front of a raucous crowd 1,337, Duquesne responded to a first-set loss by winning the second and third sets, but the Phoenix took momentum with a 25-15 win fourth set win, on their way to a set five and match victory.
Liz Wayne posted a career-high 18 kills in the victory, while
Summer Slade (14) and
Maria Mosbacher (12) also reached double-figures in kills in the contest.
Dani Suiter assisted on 34 kills, while
Hailey Poling contributed 15 helpers.
On defense,
Claire Boe led the way with 26 digs, while
Summer Slade posted a career-high 22 digs in her second double-double of the season.
Ego Onu added 17 digs, while
Morgan Kelly also reached double-digits in digs with 11.
The Dukes will finish out the ChampYinz Invitational tomorrow, when the Dukes battle two Power-5 foes in Ohio State at 11:00 a.m. and Pitt at 8:00 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In a match that featured 18 ties and nine lead changes, Duquesne was able to rally with a 6-1 run down 19-13 to tie the first set at 20-20. Green Bay earned the next two points, as the Phoenix would take five of the final seven points to earn the set one victory.
- With the score tied at 8-8 in the second set, Duquesne would consistently hold a lead the rest of the set, building its advantage to as high as 22-16. The Dukes would finish off the Phoenix in set two off an attack error to tie the match at 1-1.
- The Dukes and Phoenix were neck-and-neck in the third set, with Duquesne its largest lead of the set at 24-20 and on set point at 25-21. Six of Slade's kills came in the second set, where she posted a .417 hitting percentage.
- The Phoenix began the match on a 7-2 run, extending its lead to 22-10. The Dukes would win five of the final eight points, but Green Bay tied the contest at 2-2 with a 25-15 set win.
- With set five tied at 4-4, Green Bay would take advantage on a 4-0 run. Duquesne cut the lead to 11-8, but Green Bay would take the match on a 4-2 run.
- Day one of the ChampYinz Volleyball Invitational served as a precursor to the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship which will be hosted by Duquesne University, SportsPITTSBURGH and PPG Paints Arena on Dec. 19 & 21.
