PHILADELPHIA – The Duquesne women's soccer team (3-4-2, 1-2-0 A10) could not hold off a La Salle (6-4-1, 2-1-0) comeback, as the Explorer's Amirah Louketis scored the game-winning goal in the 101st minute to take down the Dukes in a double-overtime thriller at McCarthy Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Deena DeBaldo registered her seventh goal of the season in the 10th minute to get the Dukes an early lead off a pass from
Jaimi Araujo. The Dukes increased their lead to two in the 29th minute, as
Kayla Winicki took a deep shot that hit the cross bar and would deflect into the goal after hitting the back of the La Salle goalkeeper, resulting in an own-goal.
The Explorers quickly erased the Duquesne lead, scoring a pair of goals in a less than two and-a-half minutes to tie the contest at 2-2. The game would remain without a score for the next 69:24 minutes of game time, until La Salle recorded the game-winning goal in the 101st minute.
Duquesne returns home to the Bluff on Thursday, when the Dukes host Richmond at Rooney Field. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Araujo found DeBaldo, who advanced the ball into the left-side of the box. The junior took the shot, as the ball went to the left of the diving keeper in the 10th minute. She is ranks second in the conference in goals with seven on the season.
- In the 29th minute, Winicki took a deep shot that hit the crossbar, as the ball would deflect off the goalkeeper and into the net.
- Megan Virgin made two saves in net for Duqeusne, while La Salle's Claudia Jenkins recorded five stops.
- La Salle held advantages in shots (17-12) and corner kicks (5-4),
- Duquesne led 54 percent to 46 percent in time of possession.
