Omari Cotterell scored in the 97th minute to give La Salle (5-4, 1-1) a 2-1 overtime win over Duquesne (6-2-1, 1-1) on McCarthy Field in Philadelphia Saturday night. The Explorers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third minute, before
Zach Hall tied on a header off a corner in the 19th minute. The game remained deadlocked until Cotterell's deciding goal. It was the second goal in as many games for Hall, who moved into a tie with
Manel Busquets for the team lead in goals with four. Duquesne heads to Lynchburg, Va. for a non-conference match at Liberty on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. The trip south is the last of five consecutive road matches for the Dukes. It will also be DU's first game outside of the state of Pennsylvania this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- La Salle took an early lead when Nigel Buckley took a through ball and put it in the lower right corner in the third minute.
- The 1-0 lead lasted until Hall headed in a corner from Nate Dragisich in the 19th minute. It was the second goal in as many games for Hall who scored in the 14th minute at Saint Francis U on Tuesday. The goal, which was the 11th of Hall's career, tied him for the team lead, with Manel Busquets, with four.
- La Salle outshot Duquesne 3-2 in the defensive-minded opening 45 minutes.
- DU keeper Robbie McKelvey recorded four saves in the first 18 minutes of the second half for the Dukes to keep the game knotted at 1-1.
- Busquets took a long ball down the right side and flicked it off the right post with under 30 seconds remaining in regulation.
- La Salle outshot Duquesne 15-7 overall - and 7-3 on goal - in regulation.
- Gavin Watt stripped a hard-charging Nigel Buckley inside the box with just over five minutes remaining in the first overtime.
- Two minutes later, Cotterell took the ball just outside the center circle on the La Salle end and weaved through three Dukes before putting the ball in the right corner for the game-winner. It was his first goal of the season.
- This was just the second time in nine matches that the Dukes surrendered more than one goal.
- La Salle finished with a 16-7 advantage in shots including an 8-3 margin in shots on goal.
- Duquesne's McKelvey finished with six saves.
DUQUESNE HEAD COACH CHASE BROOKS
   Â
"If you want to win soccer games, all the details matter. You've got to do all of the little things right all the time - there are no exceptions. Tonight we didn't do those things and the opposing team did. We have to learn from this and move forward."
