@DuqMSoccer Comes up Short at Liberty

Busquets nets team-high fifth goal in defeat

Liberty (4-6) got a pair of goals in the first 19 minutes and hung on to defeat Duquesne (6-3-1), 2-1, in a non-conference match-up in Lynchburg, Va. The Dukes, playing their last of five consecutive road games, got a goal from Manel Busquets in the 78th minute, but could not close the gap. Duquesne returns to Atlantic 10 play on Saturday night when it hosts St. Bonaventure (2-6, 0-2) at 7:00 p.m. on Rooney Field (ESPN+).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tyler Welch (11') and Seth Clark (19') scored on Liberty's first two shots on goal.
  • The Dukes had a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes.
  • The two teams combined for just one shot in the first 25 minutes of the second half.
  • Duquesne's first shot of the second half came off the foot of Noah Raphael in the 74th minute
  • Manel Busquets broke the ice four minutes later when he netted his team-high fifth goal of the season in the 78th minute.
  • Liberty finished with an 11-10 edge in total shots. The Dukes led in shots on goal 6-2.
  • Nathan Dossantos paced Duquesne with a pair of shots on goal.
  • Liberty keeper Danny Cordero finished with five saves.

     "It took us 20 minutes to wake up tonight and at that point, when you're down 2-0 on the road, you are always going to have an uphill battle. I'm proud of the way our guys responded after the fact, but with this group, we have to learn from these moments. We still have to grow up a bit. Its time to put in some work to get ready for our next conference game."
