Jonathan Niel's goal in the 67th minute proved to be the difference as Saint Francis U (3-3) handed Duquesne (6-1-1, 1-0) its first loss of the season, 2-1, in a non-conference match up at Stokes Soccer Complex in Loretto, Pa.
Zach Hall (14') scored for DU, which saw its school record six-game win streak snapped. SFU, the Northeast Conference preseason favorite, got its first goal from Brandon Ott in the 36th minute. DU returns to Atlantic 10 play at La Salle on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Zach Hall netted the first goal of the game, and his third goal of the season, in the 14th minute when he gathered a saved Manel Busquets shot and placed it in the left corner from the center top of the box. Busquets' hard shot from the right side came off a long ball from Mortiz Kappelsberger.
- SFU's Felix Tonne fired wide left from 12 yards out on the Red Flash's first real opportunity in the 23rd minute.
- Brandon Ott tied it on a free kick in the 36th minute. Ott's shot, from nearly 30 yards out, bounced in traffic in front of the six, and over the head of DU keeper Robbie McKelvey.
- Carter Breen nearly scored on his first touch off a four-pass build up one minute later, but his shot from the top of the box slid wide right.
- SFU's Lucas Rosa made a long run from beyond midfield and found Niel for a shot from the left side that was saved by McKelvey in the 49th minute.
- Nate Dragisich took a cross from Busquets and headed it wide in the 65th minute.
- Saint Francis U took the lead on a goal from Niel in the 67th minute. Jeff Thielman crossed the ball from the left side and Neil and DU's Kappelsberger arrived simultaneously. It was ruled that the ball bounced off of Neil into the net from inside the six.
- The Dukes turned up the pressure earning four corners in the final four minutes, but could not get the ball on frame.
- SFU finished with a 17-14 advantage in shots. Shots on goal were even at six. Duquesne had nine corners to three for the Red Flash.
- The defeat snapped a two-game road win streak for the Dukes. The streak was the program's longest on the road since 2009.
- This was the first time in eight games that the Dukes surrendered more than one goal.
- It was also the first time the Dukes trailed since the 54th minute of the season opening draw with Bowling Green.
DUQUESNE HEAD COACH CHASE BROOKS
   Â
"We started strong, and going up a goal early was a positive sign. We let our foot off the gas a bit and you can't do that in Division I college soccer. Every team is good enough and Saint Francis showed that today. They played very well. Ultimately we regrouped and got back into it late in the second half, but it just was not enough. Its back to work tomorrow to prepare for La Salle."
