@DuqMSoccer Opens A-10 Play at Saint Joseph's

Dukes take school record-tying five game win streak to Philly

Duquesne (5-0-1), winner of a school record-tying five in a row, opens Atlantic 10 play at Saint Joseph's (3-3-0) at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21. SJU, picked to finish 8th in the A-10 preseason poll, is in the second game of a five-game homestand. The Hawks have won three of their past four, including a 4-1 win over William & Mary on Tuesday. This is the second of five consecutive road matches for the Dukes who extended their win streak to five, with 2-0 victory at Robert Morris on Wednesday. DU is looking to post back-to-back road wins for the first time since 2009 (at Saint Joe's and at Temple).

THE SERIES VS. SAINT JOSEPH'S
  • Duquesne leads the overall series 13-6-1, including a 7-3-0 advantage in matches at Philadelphia.
  • DU has won the past four in Philly.
  • The Dukes had a seven-game series win streak prior to last year's 2-2 (2OT) draw in Pittsburgh. The seven-match streak was Duquesne's longest against any A-10 school since the inception of the Dukes' program in 1995.
  • Duquesne has won 11 of the past 13 meetings and is 11-1-1 vs. the Hawks over that span.
  • SJU's last series win came on Oct. 22, 2006 in Philadelphia (1-0). The Hawks last win in Pittsburgh was on Oct. 7, 2001 (1-0).
  • Duquesne is 1-0-0 on the road and Saint Joseph's is 2-2-0 at home this season.

QUICK HITS
Duquesne's 5-0-1 start marks the first time the Dukes have been undefeated through six matches since 2008 (3-0-3). It is the first time since the 2005 Atlantic 10 regular season co-Championship season that the Dukes have posted five wins in their first six games.

DU's UNDEFEATED STARTS
2002 - seven matches (5-0-2)
2019 - six matches (5-0-1)
2008 - six matches (3-0-3)
  • Jack Shearer (53') and Manel Busquets (79') led the Dukes to a 2-0 win at Robert Morris on Wednesday. It was DU's first win at RMU since 2009 (ending a four-match winless streak in Moon Township)
  • Duquesne was ranked 10th in the Southeast Region of the Sept. 17 United Soccer Coaches Poll.
  • DU's five-game win streak has tied the school record set in 2005 and matched in 2006.
  • Duquesne has surrendered just three goals on 96 shots (34 on goal) through six matches.
  • The Dukes haven't trailed since the 54th minute of the season opening draw with Bowling Green.
  • Neither Duquesne nor its opponent enjoyed a lead of more than one goal this season, until DU jumped out to a 2-0 first half lead vs. Cal Baptist on Sept. 15.
  • DU's 2-0 win at Robert Morris marked its first decided by a two-goal margin this season.
  • Senior goalkeeper Robbie McKelvey, the Sept. 3 A-10 Defensive Player of the Week, has given up just three goals in 560 minutes. He enters the SJU game with 30 total saves, a 0.48 goals against average and three shutouts (vs. Oakland, vs. VMI and at Robert Morris).
  • DU's nine goals this season have come from six players: senior Zach Hall (eighth and ninth career vs. Bowling Green & vs. Cal Baptist), sophomore Manel Busquets (fifth and sixth career vs. Oakland and at Robert Morris; the Oakland goal was a game-winner), first-year St. John's transfer Jack Shearer (fourth career and first as a Duke vs. Niagara & second goal was a game-winner at Robert Morris), sophomore Eric Zech (first career vs. VMI), Nate Dragisich (first career, game-winner in 89' vs. Niagara) & Moritz Kappelsberger (third career, game-winning PK in the 33rd minute vs. Cal Baptist).
  • Sophomore Manel Busquets leads the Dukes with 15 shots. Jack Shearer and Zach Hall lead the team in shots on goal with nine and eight respectively.
  • Duquesne is in its seventh season under head coach Chase Brooks. Brooks has led the Dukes to three Atlantic 10 Conference tournament appearances (2013, 2015 & 2016).
  • The Dukes return eight field players who started 10 or more games last season in seniors D Zach Hall (15/12) & D/M Ryan Landry (14/14), along with sophomores D Mortiz Kappelsberger (16/16), D/M Nathan Dossantos (16/16), D/M Rob Dymond (13/11), F Manel Busquets (15/15), D Eric Zech (16/16) and Kendall Newman (15/15). Newman made his season debut at Robert Morris (return from injury).
  • Busquets (11 points, 4 goals) and Dymond (7 points, 3 goals) were DU's top returning point-getters and goal scorers from last season. Hall and Kappelsberger (both 5 points, 2 goals) were next. Dossantos was the only other returnee with a point last year (2 points on one goal).
