PHILADELPHIA – In the first of the two day Valley Forge Sports Invitational, the Duquesne volleyball team (3-6) defeated Chicago State by a score of 3-1, but fell to Penn, 3-0, at the Palestra on Friday night.
In the victory over Chicago State,
Summer Slade connected on a career-high 19 kills (.302), while registering 21 digs for her third double-double of the season.
Liz Wayne also reached double-figures with 10 kills (.318), while
Maria Mosbacher added eight kills.
Dani Suiter dished out 30 assists in the contest.
Claire Boe led the squad with 24 digs.
Against the Quakers, Wayne tallied nine kills (.438) to lead the offense, while Mosbacher and Slade each earned six kills.
The Dukes close out the Valley Forge Sports Invitational tomorrow, facing Saint Francis Brooklyn at 1:30 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST CHICAGO STATE
- With the first set at 8-6 in favor of Chicago State, the Cougars would sprint ahead on a 12-4 to extend their lead to 20-10. The Dukes would not back down, finishing the set on a 9-6 run, but the Cougars would earn a kill on set point to take an early lead.
- The second set – which featured nine tie scores and three lead changes – was neck-and-neck, with neither team leading by more than four at any point in the set. With the set tied at 16-16, Duquesne would put together a 5-1 sprint, taking a 21-17 lead. Chicago State immediately went on a 5-0 run, which forced a Duquesne timeout. With the Cougars looking to take a 2-0 lead in the match up 22-21, the Dukes responded by earning four of the final five points, as a block assist from Liz Wayne and Morgan Kelly on set point (25-23) tied the match at 1-1.
- Duquesne led 10-6 early on in the third set and increased its advantage to 19-10 following a 9-4 surge. Chicago State would make it interesting, retaliating with a 6-1 run of its own to make it a 20-16 contest. Following a Duquesne timeout, the Dukes earned five consecutive points to win the set, 25-16 and to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
- The fourth set was similar to the second set, as the game was highlighted by 11 ties and four lead changes. Duquesne would take a 17-12 lead, following a 7-2 sprint with the score tied at 10-10. The Cougars would not bow out easy, as a 9-4 run tied the contest at 21-21. Back-to-back Slade kills would force a CSU timeout with the score at 23-21. After a Dukes service error made it a one-point set, a Slade kill and a CSU attack error would give the Dukes the match at 25-22.
- DU hit .192 compared to Chicago State's .107.
- The Dukes led 50-47 on kills, 49-45 on assists and 84-79 on digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST PENN
- In the first set, the Quakers extended their 8-6 lead to 19-9 following an 11-3 run. The Dukes would fight back into the set with a 9-5 run, but Penn would take a 1-0 lead following a 25-18 first set.
- Duquesne would take a 7-4 lead in the first set, holding a lead until the Quakers embarked on a 6-2 sprint to take a 10-9 lead. With set tied at 14-14, Penn would earn seven of the next nine points, taking a 20-16 advantage. The Dukes sliced the deficit to just two at 21-19, but the Quakers finished the set with four consecutive points, taking a 2-0 lead with a second set victory of 25-19.
- The third set was highly competitive, featuring 17 tied scores and nine lead changes; neither team holding a lead larger than three at any point. The Dukes strung together a 3-0 sprint down by a single point at 19-18 to take a 21-19 lead. Penn fired off a 3-0 run of its own, retaking the lead at 22-21. Duquesne tied the contest up at 22-22 after a Mosbacher kill, but a Quaker kill, a Duke attack error and a another Quaker kill gave Penn the set win at 25-22 and the match at 3-0.
