PHILADELPHIA – Maria Mosbacher,
Summer Slade and
Liz Wayne all posted double-digit kills, as Duquesne (4-6) earned a 3-1 win over Saint Francis Brooklyn (4-4) to complete the Valley Forge Sports Invitational at the Palestra on Saturday afternoon.
The Dukes earned a hard-fought first set by a score of 26-24, but the Terriers rallied to earn a set two victory of 25-23 to the tie the match. Duquesne was able to top St. Francis Brooklyn in the third set by a score of 25-21, and rolled past the Terriers by a score of 25-12 to secure its fourth victory of the season.
Duquesne's hitting percentage of .341 is a season-best, and its highest hitting percentage since posting a .375 clip against George Mason on Oct. 28 2017.
Mosbacher registered 18 kills to lead the Dukes, while
Summer Slade (15) and Wayne also reached double digits. Mosbacher recorded a career-high hitting percentage of .567, with just one attack error on 30 total attempts. Wayne also posted a career-high hitting percentage, with 10 kills on 15 attempts and just two attack errors.
Dani Suiter (27) and
Hailey Poling (19) combined for 46 of Duquesne's 56 total assists on the day.
Claire Boe led a group of four Dukes that reached 10-plus digs with 16. Poling registered 13 digs, while Slade and Ashely Larson earned 12 each. Slade posted her second-double-double of the tournament and her fourth of the season. Poling's double-double is the first of her career.
Duquesne will head to the Mountaineer Invitational next weekend, facing host West Virginia on Friday night before taking on Navy and Eastern Kentucky on Saturday in Morgantown.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a 3-0 run gave Duquesne an 8-5 lead in the first set, St. Francis Brooklyn ensued on a 6-1 run to take a 11-9 advantage over the Dukes. Duquesne responded with an impressive 9-0 stretch, featuring kills from five different Dukes, as Duquesne led 18-11. Not to be outdone, SFBK would come within one point of Duquesne after 6-0 run made it an 18-17 game. After points were traded, Morgan Kelly connected on back-to-back kills with the score at 24-24 to give the opening set to the Dukes at 26-24.
- SFBK began the second set on a 6-0 stretch, before Duquesne countered with a 6-1 run to make it a 7-6 contest. SFBK enlarged its lead to 15-11 and 18-13, before the Dukes cut the deficit to just two at 18-16 after a 3-0 run. Duquesne would tie the match at 22-22, but SFBK would earn three of the final four points to tie the match at 1-1.
- In another tightly-fought set, Duquesne would take 17-13 lead after a ball handling error and a Poling kill. SFBK would eventually tie the contest at 18-18 after a 5-1 sprint. The Dukes responded with a 6-2 run to reach set point at 24-20. SFBK would tally a kill on the next play, but a Mosbacher kill off a dish from Suiter would give Duquesne a 2-1 lead after winning the third set, 25-21.
- With the fourth set tied at 4-4, the Dukes surged on a 9-0 run, taking a 13-4 advantage. SFBK would cut the Dukes' lead to 18-10, but Duquesne would power forward with a 7-2 run to end the set, with a dominant set score of 25-12.
- Duquesne led 60-46 on kills, .341 to .184 on hitting percentage, 7-1 on blocks, 56-41 on assists and 67-47 on digs.
- Along with hitting percentage, the Dukes tallied season-highs in kills, digs and assists.
