Dragisich Nets Game-Winner in 89th Minute

PITTSBURGH - Freshman Nate Dragisich found the back of the net in the 89th minute to give Duquesne a dramatic 2-1 win over Niagara (1-3-0) on Rooney Field. Dragisich's game-winner came just four minutes after Niagara's Rodrigo Almeida tied it on a header. With the win, the Dukes moved to 3-0-1, which is the program's best start since the 2014 team opened 3-0-2. Duquesne completes its season-opening five-game homestand vs. Cal Baptist on Sunday at noon. The men's game will be followed by the DU women vs. Youngstown State.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Duquesne, which enjoyed a 60/40 advantage in time of possession in the first half, got on the board when first-year St. John's transfer Jack Shearer took a pass from Owen Rossi and put it by Josh Savoni from deep in the box with seven seconds left in the half. It was Shearer's fourth career goal and first as a Duke.
  • The Dukes held the lead until Rodrigo Almeida took a cross from Matthew Krucko-Moeller and headed it past DU's Robbie McKelvey in the 85th minute. It was the first goal surrendered by the Dukes since the 6th minute of the season-opening 1-1 draw with Bowling Green.
  • The tie lasted for just four minutes before Dragisich gathered the ball just outside the top of the box and rifled a shot into the upper right corner for the game-winner.
  • The Dukes outshot the Purple Eagles 16-10, including 10-3 on goal. Dragisich put a game-high four of his five shots on net.

DUQUESNE HEAD COACH CHASE BROOKS
"With a young team you are going to have highs and lows - ups and downs - and everything in between. I'm most proud of the guys because we took a step forward in trying to learn how to win games. Tonight was about that will to get the result. We have a lot to learn, but it was a positive step forward for the program."
