PITTSBURGH – After back-to-back draws with Loyola Marymount and Appalachian State the previous two games, it looked as if the Duquesne women's soccer team (1-1-2) was headed towards a third consecutive tie against Lehigh (0-2-2) on Sunday. Junior forward
Lauren Bell was able to avoid that situation, finding the back of the net in the 100th minute against the Mountain Hawks after drilling in a pass from
Ashley Rodriguez to lift the Dukes to its first win of the season.
Sunday's contest featured a similar sequence as the Loyola Marymount and Appalachian State contests, as Duquesne's
Alex Saturni gave the Dukes a 1-0 lead, on her second career goal in the 62nd minute. However, the Mountain Hawks were able to strike for the equalizer less than six minutes later after a cross from Lehigh's Maggie Wadsworth found Kayla Arestivo's in the center of the box. Arrestivo one-timed the pass above goalkeeper's glove to tie the contest up at 1-1.
Just under the one-minute mark of the second overtime period, Bell took a pass from Rodriguez deep in the attacking zone, depositing the shot past the Mountain Hawk keeper to the right side.
The Dukes will face a challenge opponent in their next contest at N.C. State on Sunday, September 8. The game is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Lehigh tied the contest in the 68th minute, Duquesne tallied three shots in a span of a couple of seconds in the 75th minute. The frenzy in the Duke's offensive zone prompted Lehigh to foul in the box, resulting in a Duquesne penalty kick. Deena DeBaldo's penalty kick would be saved, by Lehigh's Miranda Royds, keeping the score tied at 1-1.
- Megan Virgin earned her first win as a Duke, making five saves. She has only allowed five goals through five games as a Duke.
- Of Lehigh's 24 shots, six were on target. Duquesne tallied 19 shots, with 10 on goal.
- Lehigh led 5-4 on corner kicks.
- Duquesne led 51 percent to 49 percent in possession.
DUQUESNE HEAD COACH AL ALVINE
"I'm proud that we scored first like the last couple games, but this time we were rewarded with a win. This is another game where we scored first. The resilience of the kids to give up the equalizer and then take a miss on a penalty kick. We didn't let our heads drop. We kept pushing and kept pushing and then ultimately we found our game-winning goal. I couldn't be prouder. It's good to get that first win on the board. Now we have to get ready for a tough game against NC State next week. This is a good momentum builder for that."
