@DuqWSoccer Draws with Appalachian State, 1-1

Box Score BOONE, N.C. – The Duquesne women's soccer team battled Appalachian State to a 1-1 draw in a Friday matinee at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.

For the second-consecutive game, Deena DeBaldo gave the Dukes a lead in the first half, as she found the back of net off a pass from Sydney Routch at the five minute mark. With just a tick left in the first half, Appalachian State's Mary Perkins drilled a deep shot just underneath the cross bar for the equalizing goal.

The Dukes outshot the Mountaineers 6-4 over the final 65 minutes, but could not find the back of the net, as Duquesne would have to settle for its second consecutive 1-1 tie.

The Dukes return home this Sunday, as Duquesne hosts in-state foe Lehigh for the first ever time at Rooney Field. Game time is slated for a noon start.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • DeBaldo's fifth career goal beat the goalkeeper to the left side after entering the box. Routch set up the play nicely after receiving a pass from Brooke Schutter.
  • Megan Virgin made four saves in net, allowing just her fourth goal through three games as a Duke.
  • It looked as if first half would end with Duquesne leading 1-0, but the last second shot from Perkins skimmed under the cross bar for Appalachia State's first goal of the season.
  • Overall, Appalachian State led 13-10 in shots.
  • The Mountaineers led 6-3 in corners.
  • Three of Duquesne's 10 shots were on target, while five of 13 of Appalachian State's shots reached the net.
  • In the first overtime, Schutter nearly ended the game with a score, but the shot went wide left.
  • Appalachian State led 54 percent to 46 percent in time of possession.
HEAD COACH AL ALVINE
"It was certainly a frustrating afternoon. We weren't at our best today, but credit to Appalachian State. They were physical and committed in their home opener. We need to be better in the final third and we need to manage the game better at the end of each half. We're looking forward to Sunday and the opportunity to get our first win of the season."
