PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne women's basketball team scored the second-most points in a game in program history - including school records for points in a quarter and half - in a 106-69 rout of Rhode Island (8-21) in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championship on Tuesday night at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
With their sixth straight victory, the No. 3 seed Dukes (18-12) advance to Friday night's A-10Â quarterfinals to face No. 6 Saint Louis. The Billikens defeated Richmond 58-49 on Tuesday night.
Duquesne's 106 points are second in school history only to a 116-point performance in a 116-94 win over Valparaiso on Nov. 23, 1990.
Chassidy Omogrosso paced five Dukes in double-figures with a game-high 22 points (8-12 FG, 5-8 3FG) on the night. The senior guard moved into sole possession of third place on the Dukes' all-time scoring list with 1,680 career points, passing Candace Futrell (1,668 points / 2001-04).
Conor Richardson netted a season-best 20 points (7-10 FG, 2-3 3FG, 4-4 FT) in just 13 minutes followed by Laia Sole with 14 (7-11 FG), Julijana Vojinovic with 13 (4-4 FG, 4-4 FT) and Libby Bazelak with 12 (5-7 FG, 2-3 3FG).
Omogrosso set the tone early on for the Dukes with a pair of 3-pointers in the first minute of the contest. After two Rams free throws, Duquesne rattled off a 16-2 run, capped by seven straight points by Richardson to put Duquesne on top 22-6 just over five minutes in.
The Rams cut the Dukes' advantage to 22-11, followed by a 12-2 surge by the Dukes which gave them a 34-13 lead on a Bazelak layup with two minutes remaining in the quarter.
After leading by as many as 23 in the opening period, the Dukes picked it up right where they left off in the second quarter with 3-pointers on consecutive possessions by Paige Cannon and Omogrosso. Duquesne would close the first half with an 8-2 spurt including six points from Richardson to take a 66-36 edge into the locker room.
Rhode Island's Nicole Jorgensen opened the second half with a jumper, before the Dukes countered with 13 of the next 16 points to gain a 38-point advantage at 79-41, a run ignited by a pair of triples by Omogrosso and another three-pointer by Bazelak.
Duquesne led by as many as 41 in the fourth quarter after Angela Staffileno connected on a 3-pointer at the 7:55 mark of the fourth quarter.
The Dukes shot a season-high 63.5 pct. (40-of-63) from the field, representing a high for Duquesne in the Dan Burt era. DU also connected on 59.1 pct. (13-of-22) of attempts from behind the arc and 86.7 pct. (13-of-15) from the free throw line.
The Dukes dished out 28 assists on 40 made field goals in the win, with 10 players recording an assist and six players with at least three assists.
The Duquesne bench chipped in 61 of the 106 points scored.
The Dukes also scored 28 fast break points in the win.
Sole and Cannon paced Duquesne with five boards apiece while Kadri-Ann Lass recorded five blocked shots. Sole, Amana Kalin and Vojinovic each posted four assists for Duquesne.
Jorgensen led the Rams with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds.
GAME NOTES
- Tuesday marked the first time the Dukes scored 100 points since a 100-69 win over Niagara on Nov. 15, 2009.
- Duquesne's 42 points were the most in a quarter, topping the previous high of 33 points set twice (1st quarter of 97-76 win over Seton Hall in the 2016 NCAA Tournament & 4th quarter of a 78-63 win over Saint Joseph's in the A-10 Semifinals in 2017)
- The Dukes' 66 first-half points were the most in a half in program history, besting the previous record of 64 points set in the 116-94 win over Valpo in 1990.
- Duquesne had five players score in double-figures for the first time since an 87-68 win over Saint Francis U on Nov. 30, 2017 (Vojinovic - 21, Omogrosso - 19, Cannon - 12, Lass - 11, Bazelak - 10).
