Spiders Hold Off Dukes

RICHMOND, Va. - Duquesne scored three straight goals in the closing minutes of an Atlantic 10 road contest on Friday morning at Richmond to cut the Spiders' lead in half, but the defending conference champion held off the Dukes' comeback bid in an 18-14 decision at Robins Stadium.

Duquesne moves to 5-4 on the season and 0-3 in league play, while Richmond - tabbed to repeat as A-10 champions in the preseason poll - improve to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the Spiders took a 7-3 lead, Duquesne answered with a 5-2 surge with a pair of goals by Sarah Kollhoff and Megan Buettner to minimize the Richmond advantage to 9-8.
  • The Spiders owned a 10-8 edge at half when the Dukes opened the second frame with three straight goals by Carlee Braverman, Maddie Hart and Rilee Bradshaw, giving DU an 11-10 lead.
  • Richmond responded with seven consecutive goals to gain a 17-11 advantage with just over seven minutes remaining.
  • Courtney Battles scored her third goal of the day followed by two scores from Bradshaw to shrink the deficit to 17-14 at the 2:56 mark of the second half.
  • Richmond's Katie Sciandra sealed the win for the host Spiders with a goal with just over a minute showing on the clock.
