PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne women's basketball team was able to hold off a late fourth quarter scoring surge from Toledo, as the Dukes (7-2) knocked down 7-of-8 free throws in the final minute to down the Rockets (2-5), 79-74, on Saturday night at La Roche University. The Dukes extend their winning streak to seven consecutive games with the victory over the Rockets.
Duquesne grabbed its biggest lead of the contest at 66-52 with 7:55 remaining, as the Rockets whittled the deficit to just one at two different occasions with under two minutes left. With Duquesne leading 72-71 with just 49 seconds remaining, freshman Amaya Hamilton drained a pair from the charity stripe to increase the Dukes' lead to 74-71. The Dukes would increase its lead to five after Paige connected on both free throws with 25 seconds left, as Hamilton put the game on ice, with two free throws with 12 seconds left, as the Dukes' earned its seventh win in a row.
Amanda Kalin posted a career-best 20 points (7-11 FG, 2-3 3PT) in the winning effort. Libby Bazelak added 17 points, and filled the stat-sheet with game-highs of seven rebounds and six assists. Three different Dukes registered nine points, as Cannon, Laia Solé and Nina Aho were each a point away from posting double-figure totals. Cannon grabbed six rebounds off the glass as the Dukes led the Rockets 31-29 in the category.
The first quarter went back and forth, until a Duquesne 7-3 sprint gave the Dukes a 17-11 advantage with 1:34 remaining in the opening frame. Ultimately, the Duquesne entered the second period with a 19-15 lead. Aho (7) and Kalin (8) combined for 15 points in the first 10 minutes of action. Â Â Â
The Dukes outscored the Rockets 24-16 in the second quarter to gain some separation at the half, taking a 43-31 advantage into the locker room. With Duquesne leading 32-30 with 4:05 remaining, the Dukes ended the half on an 11-1 sprint to grab a 12-point lead after 20 minutes. Â
In the third, the Dukes maintained a nine-plus point lead the entire way, as the Dukes would head to the final quarter with a 61-49 lead.
After the Dukes extended its lead to a game-high 14 points, the Rockets fought their way back with a 17-4 run, slicing the Duquesne lead to just one at 70-69. A Solé layup lengthened the Dukes' lead to three, but a jumper from Toledo's Nakiah Black shrunk the lead to just a single point once again. After both teams traded offensive fouls, the Dukes knocked down 7-of-8 attempts from the line to secure its seventh-straight win, as the Dukes earned the 79-74 triumph in their first of nine home games this season at La Roche University.
The Dukes look to add to its NCAA leading five road victories this season on Tuesday night, as Duquesne travels to Ithaca, N.Y. to battle Cornell at 7:00 p.m.
