Dukes Win Streak Ended at 10

DU falls to UAB at St. Pete Shootout

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. - UAB (8-4) shot 53.3 percent, including 50 percent from the 3-point arc, to hand Duquesne its first defeat, 77-68, in the second round of the St. Pete Shootout at Eckerd College's McArthur Center in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The Dukes (10-1) shot a season-low 36.4 percent, including 5-of-27 from 3-point, in seeing their season-opening win streak - the school's best since 1953-54 - snapped at 10.

Marcus Weathers led the Dukes with 18 points and Michael Hughes and Sincere Carry finished with 13 points each.

The game was tied a 56-56, before UAB's Tavin Lovan converted a three-point play with 5:37 left that put the Blazers up for good.

Duquesne missed eight consecutive shots before Sincere Carry cut it to 62-60 on a drive at the 3:41 mark. Carry then converted a three-point play to pull the Dukes within one at 66-65 with 2:46 left.

A Lovan layup made it a three-point game, before UAB's Jalen Benjamin launched a 3-pointer that was halfway down, rolled out and was tapped in by DU's Michael Hughes for a goaltend that made it 71-65.

The Dukes would get no closer the rest of the way.

There was one tie and six lead changes a first half that ended with UAB up 30-28. Weathers led the Dukes with 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting in the opening 20 minutes.

UAB matched its largest lead at 35-30, before the Dukes went on an 8-0 run consisting of six free throws and a bucket from Tavian Dunn-Martin - DU's first field goal of the half - which gave the Dukes a 38-35 lead with 14:52 to go.

DU, which was in the double bonus with over 13 minutes left, took a 42-38 lead on a pair of Weathers free throws.

Baylee Steele scored off a pass from Carry and followed with a 3-pointer to give Duquesne a short-lived 47-40 lead.

UAB answered with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to two with just over 11 minutes remaining.

Steele hit another 3-pointer and Dunn-Martin stole the ball and fed Hughes for a bucket that made it 53-47.

UAB pulled to within one on a banked in 3-pointer at the shot clock horn and took a 56-55 lead on a pair of free throws at the 6:17 mark.

The Blazers outshot the Dukes 59 percent to 31 percent in the second half. DU was able to stay in the game by converting 20 UAB turnovers into 25 points.

Duquesne is idle until Dec. 29, when it takes on Marshall in game two of the Cleveland Classic at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse at 2:30 p.m. The DU/MU game will be preceded by Ohio State vs. West Virginia at Noon.
