PHILADELPHIA – The Duquesne women's basketball team trailed by just three at halftime, but Temple outscored the Dukes 48-38 in the second half to defeat the Duquesne, 85-72, on Friday night at McGonigle Hall.
Four Dukes reached double-figures in scoring for the second consecutive contest,. Libby Bazelak led the squad with 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-7 from long range. Laia Solé (4-8 FG) poured in 14 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.Solé converted 6-of-8 attempts from the charity stripe. Paige Cannon and Amanda Kalin each added 11 points. Kalin dished five assists and grabbed three steals which led Duquesne.
The Dukes' offense took some time to click, at the Owls built a 12-5 lead just under six minutes into the opening quarter. Bazelak connected on her first 3-pointer in the first quarter to halt a 9-0 Owls run. Temple would eventually take a nine-point advantage at 19-10. The Dukes ended the quarter on a positive note as Aho poured in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut the deficit to six at 19-13.
With Temple leading 23-16 in the second quarter, Duquesne put together a 9-0 run, featuring two triples from Staffileno, Kalin and Bazelak gave the Dukes its first lead at 25-23 since the Dukes led 5-3. The Owls quickly retook the lead at 26-25, but two free throws from Cannon gave the Dukes back the lead at 27-26. The two old A-10 rivals traded points the rest of the quarter, as the Owls entered the locker room with a slim 37-34 lead.
The Owls started the second half with on a 7-2 run, but the Dukes countered with an 8-0 run, with four different Dukes registering points to tie the contest at 44-44. Temple immediately went on an 8-3 sprint to take a 52-47 advantage. The Owls then increased its lead on an 11-3 surge, as the Owls entered the fourth quarter leading 61-50.
The 11-point Temple lead increased to 17 in less than two minutes, as the Dukes trailed 69-52. Duquesne rallied back to a 10-point deficit at 69-59 after a 7-0 sprint, but that's as close as Duquesne would get, as Temple earned an 85-72 win in the 46th game of the series.
The Dukes are back in action on Sunday, as the Dukes head to Riverdale, N.Y. to battle Manhattan at 2:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
