Deena DeBaldo scored in the 89th minute to give Duquesne (5-4-2, 3-2) a come-from-behind 2-1 win over George Mason (2-9-1, 0-5) on Sunday afternoon on Rooney Field. DeBaldo's goal, her eighth of the season, followed a
Lauren Bell goal in the 77th minute to complete the DU comeback. Duquesne is idle until next Sunday, when it heads to Philadelphia to face Saint Joseph's at 1:00 p.m. (ESPN+). The SJU game is the first of two in a row for the Dukes who will be at Dayton on Thursday, Oct. 17.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- George Mason scored the only goal of the first half when Kayla Hamric took a corner from Emma Lee at the far post and found the back of the net in the sixth minute.
- Duquesne had a 7-6 edge in first half shots, Mason put three on goal - to two for the Dukes - in the opening 45.
- The Dukes had an opportunity early in the second half when Alex Saturini was taken down just outside the box in the 53rd minute. Lexy Kendro's shot off the set piece sailed over the crossbar.
- Tori Kopchak and Lauren Bell, who came on two minute prior, combined for the Dukes first goal. Bell took a cross from Kopchak and headed it past Mason's Louisa Moser in the 77th minute.
- The game remained tied until Duquesne's Alex Saturini gained position and moved into the DU zone. A George Mason player challenged Saturini and got a foot on the ball, pushing forward to DeBaldo who nestled a right-footed shot in the right corner for the game-winner.
- Duquesne finished with a 14-11 advantage in shots. The two teams had four shots on goal each.
- Megan Virgin finished with three saves for the Dukes.
DUQUESNE HEAD COACH AL ALVINE
 Â
"It certainly wasn't a vintage performance from us today. We really struggled in the first half. I thought we came out very flat and conceded an early goal. In the second half, we worked our way back into the game. I'm proud of the way we showed the resilience to come back and score two goals at the end of the game. It needs to be more of a sustained effort from us for 90 minutes. I give George Mason all the credit in the world. They had a good game plan and stifled a lot of our attacks in the first half through their pressing. At the end of the day, we found a way to get it done. We'll take the three points and we'll move on to the next one."
