PHILADELPHIA – In the 107th minute, Saint Joseph's was able to break up a scoreless tie with a header in double overtime to defeat Duquesne on Sunday afternoon at Sweeney Field.
The Hawks' Erica Behr was able to head in a corner kick, which was initiated by Gabrielle Vagnozzi for the game-winning goal.
The Dukes led 14-10 in shots and 7-5 on corner kicks.
Megan Virgin made three saves in the contest.
The Dukes are idle until Thursday night, when the Dukes battle Dayton on the road. The contest is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lexy Kendro put a shot on net in the 11th minute, but the Hawks' Cameron Perrott turned the shot away.
- Deena DeBaldo posted shots in the 27th and 36th minutes, but the Dukes leading goal-scorer could not find the back of the net on either opportunity.
- Perrott posted saves on both of Duquesne's shots on net in the second half, with Lauren Bell and Alex Saturni attempting to break the scoreless tie.
- Kendro and Jaimi Araujo each took a shot in the second overtime.
- The Hawks would head in their lone corner kick in the second overtime to win the game.
- Both teams tallied five shots on net.
- Four of the last eight meetings between the two Keystone State squads have needed at least one overtime period.
