DAYTON, Ohio – Jaimi Araujo recorded a late second-half goal to force overtime, but Dayton was able to strike for the golden goal in the final minute of the first overtime period, as the Flyers defeated Duquesne, 2-1, on Thursday night at Baujan Field.
Araujo was credited with her third goal of her freshman campaign, which was assisted by
Deena DeBaldo. Dayton's Jordan Pauley recorded the Flyers' first score, while Caroline Mink would score the golden goal in the 100th minute.
The Dukes look to continue its success at home on Sunday, when the Dukes host UMass at Rooney Field. The contest is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game was scoreless at the half, and would be remain without a goal until Pauley converted a penalty kick in the 55th minute. Pauley found the bottom left corner of the net, to give the Flyers the lead.
- Duquesne struck for the equalizer in the 85th minute, when Hannah Nguyen earned possession and took a shot at the net. The shot was blocked by a Dayton defender as DeBaldo would take possession. With Dayton's goalkeeper coming towards DeBaldo, the junior took a shot at an open net. After a Flyer defender prevented a goal, Araujo found the ball creeping towards the goal line and nudged it into the back of the net to tie the contest at 1-1.
- With just 26 seconds remaining in the first overtime, Dayton earned possession in its offensive zone, as a pass would deflect off Duquesne and head to Mink, who shot towards the net. The shot deflected off the goalkeeper for the golden goal.
- Dayton led 15-11 in shots, with both teams tallying four shots on goal.
