PK Lifts Saint Louis over Dukes

DU falls on rainy night at Rooney

Devin Boyce's penalty kick goal in the 37th minute was the difference as Saint Louis (10-5, 6-1) held off Duquesne (8-7-1, 3-4), 1-0, on rainy Rooney Field Saturday night. Boyce's deciding kick came when DU was whistled for a hand ball in the box. The Dukes, who are in a four-way tie for sixth place in the Atlantic 10 with La Salle, George Washington and George Mason, conclude the regular season Saturday at Davidson (7:00 p.m. on ESPN+). The top eight teams qualify for the Atlantic 10 Championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saint Louis broke the ice when DU's Gavin Watt was whistled for a hand ball in the box. SLU's Devin Boyce played the ensuing penalty kick in the lower left corner of the box to make it 1-0 in the 37th minute.
  • Boyce's PK was easily the best opportunity for either team in the opening 45 minutes which was played in a steady rain.
  • DU's Robbie McKelvey punched away a well-struck shot by SLU's John Klein in the 51st minute.
  • The game was delayed for over five minutes in the 54th minute as game officials sorted out physical play in the Duquesne end. DU's Nathan Dossantos was assessed a yellow card after an officials' conference.
  • DU's Noah Raphael had a shot sail wide right in the 57th minute.
  • Saint Louis finished with a 12-7 advantage in total shots. SLU had two shots on goal. Jack Shearer had DU's lone shot on goal.
  • The keepers, Saint Louis' Patrick Schulte and Duquesne's McKelvey, were credited with one save each.
  • Rain never subsided during the match.
DUQUESNE HEAD COACH CHASE BROOKS
"We battled hard for 90 minutes against arguably the best team in the conference. Ultimately it was a PK that sealed us in. I'm proud of our guys for the way that battled - it wasn't a pretty night. They hung in there and showed we can play with anyone in this conference if we put that kind of work in. We know what our job is for this next week."
