Dukes Fall to Minutemen in Double Overtime

Busquets scores team-high seventh goal for DU

UMass got a pair of goals from Graham Brenner (58' & 106'), the last of which came in the 106th minute, to give the Minutemen (5-9, 1-4) a 2-1 victory over Duquesne (8-5-1, 3-2) on Rooney Field Saturday night. The defeat, which snapped DU's two-game Atlantic 10 win streak, was the Dukes' first at home in 2019. Manel Busquets netted the Dukes' goal - his team-high seventh of the season - on a penalty kick in the 51st minute. DU hits the road to face Dayton on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN+).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Busquets had a shot sail high of the crossbar from just outside the box in the 12th minute.
  • Hector Puente another chance for the Dukes when his shot from 28 yards out hit the crossbar.
  • Duquesne outshot UMass 10-2 in the first half. The Dukes and Minutemen had two shots on goal each.
  • UMass was whistled for a hand ball in the box leading to Busquets' penalty kick. The Spaniard put it in the lower left past a diving Marvyn Dorchin (51').
  • The 1-0 lead lasted until the 58th minute when Brenner headed in a long throw from Ryan Saul inside the six. The goal was the Minutemen's first since Sept. 17 (a span of seven games).
  • DU's Nathan Dossantos had a well-struck ball from the top of the box blocked in the 88th minute.
  • Jack Shearer had a shot sail high from just outside the box with under 10 seconds remaining in the first overtime.
  • Brenner's game-winner - a header to the upper right corner - came off a well-placed free kick from Even Fournier from 35 yards out.
  • Duquesne outshot UMass 19-10, including 6-4 on goal.
  • The Dukes had six corners to four for the Minutemen.
DUQUESNE HEAD COACH CHASE BROOKS
"Soccer is a cruel sport. You can do 99 percent of the things right and still find ways to lose, and that's pretty much what we did tonight. Those moments where we needed to dig a little deeper late in the game, we struggled with and you have to credit UMass for capitalizing. Now we've got to move past this and focus on the next one."
