@DuqFB Notches Comeback Victory over Valpo

PITTSBURGH - Junior running back A.J. Hines (Wilson, N.C./Fike) rushed for 137 yards and matched a career-high with three touchdowns to help Duquesne secure a 23-21 come-from-behind win over visiting Valparaiso in a non-conference matchup on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Arthur J. Rooney Field.

After three quarters of action, the Dukes (2-1) owned a 17-14 edge over the Crusaders (0-1), before a 58-yard touchdown pass from Chris Duncan to Griffin Norberg on the first play of the fourth quarter regained the lead for Valpo.

Later in the quarter following a Valpo punt, Duquesne took over at its own 26-yard line trailing 21-17 with just under seven minutes to play.

Hines would rush six times for 44 yards on the Dukes' drive, capped by his third touchdown run of the afternoon from one yard out to give Duquesne a 23-21 advantage with 2:42 showing on the fourth quarter clock.

Early in the Dukes' 11-play, 74-yard scoring march, a big 20-yard completion on third-and-six from junior quarterback Daniel Parr (Jupiter, Fla./William T. Dwyer/FAU) to junior wide receiver Dominic Thieman (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas/Illinois) put Duquesne into Crusader territory.

After the Duquesne kickoff and Valpo driving near midfield, a pair of sacks by senior cornerback Daquan Worley (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville/Penn State) and junior defensive lineman Mike O'Malley (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Edward) for a combined loss of 15 yards left a long third-and-25 for the Crusaders with just under a minute to play.

The Dukes would force two straight incomplete passes for Valpo, sealing the two-point non-conference victory at Rooney Field.

Hines finished with a career-high 31 carries on the day, topping his previous high of 30 touches against Bryant as a freshman on Oct. 29, 2016. He also eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark for the 14th time in his career.

Parr completed 17-of-25 pass attempts (68 pct.) for 235 yards. Senior wide receiver Nehari Crawford recorded six catches for 85 yards while junior wide out Kellon Taylor (Landover, Md./DeMatha Catholic) added three receptions for a career-best 70 yards. Junior wide receiver Kareem Coles Jr. (San Diego, Calif./Madison/Idaho) hauled in five catches for 56 yards for Duquesne.

Sophomore safety Spencer DeMedal (New Wilmington, Pa./New Wilmington) registered eight tackles (five solo) to lead the DU defense followed by senior safety Brandon Stanback (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt/Buffalo) with six stops (three solo).

The Dukes outgained the Crusaders 413-325 in total yards, including a 178-96 advantage on the ground.

Duquesne came from behind twice in Saturday's victory after trailing 14-7 in the second quarter. The Dukes got on the board first on a four-yard touchdown run from Hines before Valpo answered with two consecutive one-yard rushing scores by Kyle Cartales.

Late in the opening half, Duquesne evened the score at 14-14 on Hines' second touchdown of the day on a two-yard run.

The Dukes would retake the lead in the final minute of the third quarter on junior Mitch MacZura's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic/Ohio State) career-long 38-yard field goal, which was set up by a 57-yard connection from Parr to Taylor.

Duquesne caps a three-game home stand next Saturday, Sept. 15 hosting familiar foe Dayton at Rooney Field at noon ET.
