Dukes Fall at Undefeated Wright State

Larson and Stefansson net first goals of season in 6-2 defeat

Wright State (7-0-1) scored three times in the first half, and added three more goals in a four-minute span early in the second, to defeat Duquesne, 6-2, at Dayton, Ohio. Ian Larson (76') and Gylfi Stefansson (85') scored for the Dukes (2-5-1). DU returns home to open Atlantic 10 play vs. Saint Joseph's (6-3-0) on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 7:00 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Duquesne controlled play early, keeping the ball in its scoring third for much of the first six minutes, before Wright State's Alec Phillippe, who was coming off a hat trick vs. Cleveland State, took a cross from Austin Kinley and banked a shot off the left post from the top of the six in the 10th minute.
  • DU's Luke Kelly nearly tied it two minutes later when his shot from eight yards out was stopped by Alex Williams.
  • Rob Dymond got his head on a corner in the 20th minute, but the shot was blocked by the Wright State back line.
  • Duquesne continued to pressure, before WSU countered a DU corner with a breakout. Phillippe carried it deep into the Dukes' end before finding Deri Corfe for a tap-in from the left post that made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute.
  • DU answered with a hard shot from Dymond from 18 yards out in the 28th minute that was stopped by Williams.
  • WSU continued to make the most of its opportunities when Jackson Dietrich took a pass inside the box and put it top shelf in the 34th minute. Five of the Raiders' first seven shots were on net.
  • Kendall Newman made an outstanding defensive play in sweeping away a Wright State chance at the PK spot in the 40th minute.
  • Duquesne outshot Wright State 9-8 in the opening 45 minutes. WSU put six of its shots on goal, to five for DU.
  • Wright State scored three times in a span of four minutes getting goals from Dominik Tajak (50'), Phillippe (52') and Corfe (53') to put the game out of reach.
  • Duquesne got on the board in the 75th minute when Ian Larson had a shot blocked and a rebound saved before putting his third attempt in the net. It was the first goal of the season for the senior.
  • Gylfi Stefansson scored his first career goal when he tapped in a mishandled exchange between a WSU defender and keeper in the 85th minute.
  • Wright State finished with 19 shots to 18 for Duquesne. WSU had three more shots on goal (13-10) and one more corner (7-6) than the Dukes.
  • Duquesne, who has started at least six freshmen in all eight matches this season, started six first-year players.

DUQUESNE HEAD COACH CHASE BROOKS

"Wright State is a very good team and they earned their result tonight. The difference was in the finishing. We played right with them for 90 minutes, but they finished their opportunities and we did not finish ours. If you want to be a team that gets results, you've got to put the ball in the back of the net."
