Dukes Fall to Northern Kentucky in Overtime

Busquets nets first career goal for DU

Alex Willis' header in the 96th minute was the difference as Northern Kentucky (3-0-0) pulled out a 2-1 overtime win over Duquesne (0-2-0) on Rooney Field. The goal was the second of the game for Willis, who also scored in the 36th minute. Freshman Manel Busquets tied it in the 55th minute for the Dukes. DU returns to action Sunday when it hosts Detroit Mercy at 3:00 p.m. on Rooney Field. The Duquesne women kick off Duquesne's Sunday of Soccer with a match against Binghamton at Noon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Duquesne's Zach Hall nearly got the Dukes on the board in the second minute when his header off a pass from Busquets was saved by NKU keeper Jim Barkei.
  • Barkei finished with nine saves for the Norse.
  • DU's Robbie McKelvey surrendered one goal and had nine saves prior to picking up a red card in the 76th minute.
  • Ryan Landry nearly gave the Dukes the lead in the 89th minute when his shot from above the box hit the crossbar.
  • Duquesne finished with 22 shots to 17 for Northern Kentucky. The teams finished with 11 shots on goal each.
  • NKU's Willis led all players with four shots on goal.
  • Hall and Busquets had three shots on goal each for DU.
  • There were six yellow card and three red cards issued in the match.
  • The Dukes started seven freshmen, all in the field: Manel Busquets, Nathan Dossantos, Rob Dymond, Moritz Kappelsberger, Kendall Newman Gylfi Stefansson and Eric Zech. It was the second start in as many games for all but Newman.

DUQUESNE HEAD COACH CHASE BROOKS
"After the game, my message to the guys was how much I care about them and how much I appreciated the effort they gave. It was a learning experience going against that style of play and I think we rose to the challenge extremely well. But details matter and we slipped up twice and they capitalized. That's where we hope to learn and move forward. We'll get back to work tomorrow to get ready for Detroit Mercy on Sunday."
