ARLINGTON, Texas - Duquesne rising sophomore
Olivia Farwell (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) qualified for a spot on Junior Team USA after posting a third-place finish out of 856 bowlers at the 2018 Junior Gold Championships hosted by the city of Dallas and the Dallas Sports Commission last week.
Farwell earned one of just six automatic qualifying spots for the 2019 team after recording an average of 208.58 through 26 games, highlighted by rounds of 277, 268, 267 and 253. There are just 12 total spots on Junior Team USA, which competes in several prestigious events across the world including the World Youth Championships. Â Â
At the Gold Championship event in the Lone Star State, competitors bowled 16 qualifying games over four days before the field was cut from 856 to 123. Bowlers in the U20 division bowled an additional five games before a second cut was made from 123 to 64 bowlers, and those remaining bowled an additional five games to determine the top 16 bowlers for match play.
Farwell, a National Tenpin Coaches Association All-American, sat third after the qualifying rounds with an average of 208.06 through 16 games and second in the field following the Advancer Round with an average of 211.67 through 21 games.
As one of 64 bowlers to qualify for the Final Advancer Round, she finished third and was one of the 16 bowlers to move on to double-elimination match play.
Farwell won her first match by a score of 385-381 before dropping her next two contests in match play.
In addition to Fallwell's standout performance, rising junior
Megan Cook moved on to the advancers round after placing 81st with a 191.71 average in 21 games played, while rising sophomore
Allison Hresko finished 182nd with a 182.19 average in 16 games and incoming freshman Jessica Sacks placed 360th averaging 173.19 in 16 games.
