PITTSBURGH - Duquesne defeated a pair of ranked teams in Sunday's championship round to successfully defend it Golden Bear Classic title over the weekend in Reading, Pa.

The 18th-ranked Dukes, who entered Sunday as the No. 3 seed, defeated Franklin Pierce 4-1 before toppling No. 2 seed, and 14th ranked Saint Francis U 4-2 in the second round. In the position round, Duquesne rallied from a 3-1 deficit to defeat No. 1 seed, 11th ranked Adelphi, 4-3. Olivia Farwell, who earned a spot on the all-tournament first team, knocked down eight pins in the final frame to give the Dukes a dramatic 185-184 win in the championship-deciding game seven.

"We were throwing great shots, we just weren't getting the carry, but we kept grinding and grinding," said head coach Jody Fetterhoff of the Dukes comeback. "They were confident and just trusted each other. They knew if they had an open, we had each others backs. They stayed calm and stayed within themselves and stayed together and got it done."

Cassidy Powers also was named all-tournament, earning a spot on the second team.

The Dukes averaged 185.7 in posting a 9,285 total in going 7-3 in Friday and Saturday's baker matches. DU posted a high baker score of 1011 in its match one win over Chestnut Hill.

"It started last year at this tournament," said Fetterhoff. "This was our first win as a program. To come back and win again was our motivation coming in this year. We had a slow start and they picked it up each day. We have a young team and with each tournament they're gaining more experience and just getting better and better."
