Dukes Fall to Panthers in City Game

Hughes posts first career double-double in defeat

PITTSBURGH - Michael Hughes posted his first career double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as Pitt pulled away late for a 74-53 win over Duquesne in the 87th City Game at PPG Paints Arena.

Duquesne trailed 51-45 before going scoreless for over seven minutes as the Panthers built a 66-48 lead. The Dukes missed eight-straight shots and turned it over six times during Pitt's 15-3 run.

Hughes was the only player in double figures for the Dukes who shot 33.3 percent.

Trey McGowens, who finished with two field goals, went 10-of-12 from the foul line, in leading four Pitt players in double figures with 14 points. Pitt finished at 43.9 percent despite going 3-of-15 from the 3-point arc.

Duquesne hit five of its first six shots in jumping out to a 13-6 lead. From that point the Dukes struggled, making two of their next 17 as Pitt took a 25-19 lead. The Dukes, who scored seven over the last 3:04 of the half, tied it at 27-27 on an alley-oop dunk by Michael Hughes, before Pitt scored the final three points to make it 32-29 at the half.

Pitt built its lead to 40-33 despite missing its first 11 shots of the second half.

The Panthers, who opened the half 2-of-14, made it 43-35 on a basket by Xavier Johnson with under 14 minutes left.

Xavier Johnson started the game-deciding 15-3 run with a steal and layup that turned into a three-point play.

Michael Hughes ended DU's scoring drought with a three-point play that made it 66-48 with 1:58 remaining.

Pitt, which finished with six more field goals than Duquesne, outscored the Dukes 21-10 from the foul line.

Duquesne returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 5 when it hosts Marshall at the A.J. Palumbo Center at 7:00 p.m. The Marshall game will be televised by AT&T SportsNet.

  • Michael Hughes went 9-of-11 from the field in posting his first career double-double with a career-high 20 points and career-best 10 rebounds ... his previous scoring high was 19 set in DU's last game, vs. UMass Lowell ... his previous rebound high was seven, set in the season opener vs. William & Mary.
  • Tavian Dunn-Martin came off the bench to hand out a team and career-high five assists in 24 minutes ... Dunn-Martin went 5-of-5 from the foul line in scoring seven points.
  • Duquesne's 53 points were a Dambrot Era low eclipsing the previous mark of 56 set in a 67-56 loss at Notre Dame on Nov. 20 ... it was the lowest point total by a Duquesne team since a 70-52 loss to Fordham on Feb. 22, 2017.
  • Duquesne's 22 turnovers were a Dambrot Era high ... the previous high was 20 set against Robert Morris last year ... Pitt outscored DU 28-10 off turnovers.
  • There were two ties and one lead change before Pitt took the lead for good on a Trey McGowens free throw with 55 seconds to go in the first half ... Duquesne's largest lead was eight at 8-0 with 17:51 left in the first half ... Pitt's largest lead was the 21-point final margin ...
