Big Second Half Lifts Dukes to 47-30 Win at Wagner

STATEN ISLAND – A.J. Hines (Wilson, N.C./Fike) rushed for a season-high 232 yards as Duquesne outscored Wagner 26-7 in second half to earn a 47-30 NEC road win over the Seahawks on Saturday afternoon at Hameline Field.

The Dukes pick up their third straight win to improve to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

Hines tallied a career-high 33 carries in the contest, finishing with over 200 yards from scrimmage for the third consecutive game to lead Duquesne.

After Wagner (2-7, 1-3) built a 23-14 advantage over the Dukes in the second quarter, a one-yard touchdown run by Hines in the final minute of the opening half cut the deficit to 23-21 heading into locker room.

The Duquesne defense would force two straight three-and-outs to start the second half before Daniel Parr's (Jupiter, Fla./William T. Dwyer/FAU) two-yard touchdown run gave the Dukes the lead for good. Parr faked a handoff before rolling out to the right side, trotting untouched into the end zone. The score was set up by a 45-yard reception by Nehari Crawford (Fort Pierce, Fla./Fort Pierce Central) to the Wagner one-yard line just two plays earlier.

Duquesne pushed its lead to 10 early in the fourth quarter when Crawford took a handoff from P.J. Fulmore (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) on the reverse play, rushing 37 yards for the score, putting the Dukes ahead 33-23. A 38-yard run by Hines on the final play of the third quarter put Duquesne in Seahawk territory.

Just over two minutes later on the ensuing Wagner drive, Leandro DeBrito (Pawtucket, R.I./Shea/Monroe College) picked off a T.J. Linta pass and returned it 68 yards up the sideline to the end zone, pushing the Duquesne lead to 40-23 with just over 12 minutes showing on the clock.

The Seahawks responded by ending their scoring drought with a one-yard touchdown rush by Linta, minimizing the Dukes' edge to 40-30 at the 9:47 mark of the fourth quarter.

Duquesne would be forced to punt on its next drive, but the Dukes' defense stood tall on the next Wagner possession, forcing a Seahawk turnover on downs. On fourth-and-two from the DU 40-yard line, Chris Favoroso (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Jensen Beach/Montana) stuffed Ryan Fulse – the nation's leading rusher – before the first down marker to give the Dukes the ball.

That allowed Duquesne to march 61 yards and seal the road victory with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Parr to Stew Allen (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) which extended the Dukes' advantage to 47-30. Hines carried five times for 50 yards on the drive, setting up Allen's fifth touchdown reception of the year.

Hines' 232 yards represent the second-highest total of his career. All told, Duquesne recorded a season-high 372 yards on the ground, the most since finishing with 373 rushing yards in a 47-7 triumph over Kentucky Christian on Sept. 15, 2015.

Daquan Worley (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville/Penn State) added six carries for 89 yards in the win. Worley, a defensive back who registered his first carries just last month, is averaging 12.9 yards per rush on the season.

Duquesne outgained Wagner 497-305 in the win.

The Dukes held Fulse - the leading rusher in the FCS with over 1,200 yards coming into the contest - to 54 yards on the ground, his lowest output against an FCS team this season.

Crawford hauled in four receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown while Parr finished 9-of-15 for 125 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also contributed two rushing scores in the triumph.

DeBrito and Brett Zanotto (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional/Maryland) led the Duquesne defense with nine tackles apiece. DeBrito had six solo stops including a tackle for loss to go with the 68-yard interception return and a pass breakup. His nine tackles represented a career-high.

Abner Roberts (Pittsburgh, Pa./University Prep) saw his first action of the 2018 season on Saturday, tallying six tackles (three solo) for the Dukes.

Mike O'Malley (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Edward) had five tackles on the day, including a sack and a team-high 3.5 tackles for loss to go with two hurries. Kam Carter (Germantown, Md./Gaithersburg/Pittsburgh) also had five tackles for Duquesne with a sack and two tackles for loss.

The Dukes registered a total of 10 tackles for loss for a combined 45 yards, 20 of those yards coming on plays by O'Malley. The Duquesne defense limited Wagner to just nine total yards and no first downs in the third quarter, as the Dukes took the lead for good in that stanza.

Duquesne fell behind after surrendering a pair of turnovers on its first two drives, the second resulting in an interception returned for a Wagner touchdown.

The Dukes would block the extra point before getting on the board on their next march when Parr scrambled to avoid a sack, hitting Crawford on a five-yard strike. Hines, Worley, Fulmore and Parr rushed 11 times for a combined 70 yards on the scoring drive.

The Seahawks regained the lead with a field goal followed by recovering the ensuing kickoff on a Duquesne miscue, setting up an eight-yard touchdown pass from Linta to tight end Chris Woodard to put Wagner ahead 16-7.

Parr's first rushing score of the afternoon cut the deficit to 16-14, before Wagner answered with another touchdown pass to gain its largest advantage of the day at 23-14.

The Dukes host first-place Sacred Heart (6-3, 4-0) next Saturday, Nov. 10 at noon in the home finale at Arthur J. Rooney Field. Duquesne will honor its seniors prior to the contest. The Pioneers defeated Robert Morris 38-7 on Saturday. With a win on the Bluff, SHU would claim at least a share of the NEC title and earn the conference's automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs.
