Duquesne went toe-to-toe with Atlantic 10 favorite Fordham before falling on a goal in the 95th minute on Wednesday night at Rooney Field. The Dukes (2-7-2, 0-2-1) tied it on a penalty kick by
Manel Busquets in the 59th minute only to see Fordham's (5-2-3, 1-1-0) Joergen Oland end it in overtime. The Dukes outshot the Rams 15-8, including 6-4 on goal. Busquets led DU with four shots. Duquesne heads to Fairfax, Va. to face George Mason on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 7:00 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Janos Loebe got Fordham on the board in the fourth minute when he tapped a free kick to Sameer Fathazada, got it back quickly, and drilled a shot to the right corner from 30 yards out.
- Manel Busquets took a pass from Eric Zech in stride and made a nice run down the left side, beat his man, but had his cross cleared in the 27th minute.
- DU had a free kick from the near left in the 40th minute. Moritz Kappelsberger got a head on the kick by Kurtis Orrson, but the ball was gathered in by Fordham keeper Rashid Nuhu.
- Two minutes later, Zech crossed it to a charging Busquets who could not get enough foot on it to redirect the ball on frame.
- The Dukes outshot the Rams 8-4, including 4-1 on goal, in the opening 45 minutes.
- Duquesne tied it on a penalty kick by Busquets in the 59th minute. It was the team-high fourth goal for the freshman who was dragged down on the right side of the box. Nuhu got a hand on the shot that found its way inside the left post. It was DU's first PK attempt of the season.
- DU's Robbie McKelvey made a save on a shot from Johannes Pieles after the Rams kept it in play following a corner in the 73rd minute.
- Noah Mehta flicked a shot wide of the goal on a breakout in the 82nd minute.
- Busquets nearly won it in regulation when his shot from close in off a corner was saved by Nuhu with 14 seconds left.
- Fordham ended it when Loebe looped a pass to Pieles who found Oland in front of the net in the 95th minute.
- DU outshot Fordham 15-8, including 6-4 on goal.
- Duquesne, who has started at least six freshmen in all 11 matches this season, started six first-year players. Freshman Kurtis Orrson made his first career start for the Dukes.
- Freshman Noah Raphael made his Duquesne debut late in the first half.
