@DuqMSoccer Nets First A-10 Win

Score three in second half to down George Mason, 3-0

Duquesne (3-7-2, 1-2-1) got second half goals from freshman Moritz Kappelsberger (48'), Ian Larson (66') and freshman Nathan Dossantos (74') to defeat George Mason (4-6, 2-2), 3-0 in Fairfax, Va. It was the first A-10 win for the Dukes, who remain unbeaten (3-0-2) in the all-time series. The Dukes put together one of their most dominating performances in outshooting the Patriots 17-8. DU keeper Robbie McKelvey was the beneficiary of a strong defensive effort that limited GMU to one shot on goal. It was the first career shutout for McKelvey. Duquesne returns home before heading west to face Saint Louis on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 8:00 p.m. ET.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kappelsberger sent a header high, off a corner, in the first minute for the Dukes.
  • Duquesne, pressing early, nearly generated another chance in the fifth minute when a hard-charging Zach Hall just missed getting a foot on the ball inside the six.
  • Kappelsberger got a foot on a cross from Noah Mehta that was partially blocked by a Mason defender in the 28th minute.
  • Austin Stout sent a hard shot wide left in the 42nd minute.
  • Duquesne, which maintained possession for the majority of the half, outshot Mason 6-2 in the opening 45 minutes. Neither team was credited with a shot on goal in the half.
  • Kappelsberger put it by the GMU keeper with his left-foot from the left side in the 48th minute. The possession started with a DU free kick that was blocked. DU shot again and kept the ball deep in the Mason zone before Kappelsberger put it away while falling down inside the six. It was the first career goal for Kappelsberger. It was the first shot on goal of the game.
  • Larson took in a long ball from Kappelsberger, split a pair of Mason defenders, and put it in the right side of the net from inside the box in the 66th minute. It was the third goal of the season for Larson.
  • Freshman Nathan Dossantos added his first career goal on a one-touch shot off a cross in the 74th minute.
  • The Dukes finished with a 17-8 advantage in shots, including a 6-1 margin in shots on goal.
  • Larson, who also added an assist, and Kappelsberger had two shots on goal each for the Dukes.
  • The win was DU's first on the road since a 2-0 victory at Saint Joseph's on Oct. 22, 2016 (a span of 14 road games).
  • DU's three goals were its most in a road game since a 3-1 win at George Mason on Oct. 21, 2015.
  • Duquesne, who has started at least six freshmen in all 12 matches this season, started six first-year players.

DUQUESNE HEAD COACH CHASE BROOKS
     "Before the game we talked about giving 100 percent - whatever that meant to each individual. We were looking for 100 percent focus, 100 percent energy and 100 percent execution of each individual's task. We thought if we did that, we could get the result. The guys believed they could and we put forth the full effort that we needed. Now we have to look forward to the next one."
