PITTSBURGH - Kelsey Hackbart finished second out of 120 bowlers at the Allentown sectional to qualify for the 2017 Intercollegiate Singles Championships April 18-19 and 22 at the Raising Cane's River Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Hackbart is one of 24 bowlers nationally who qualified out of four sectional fields.
"As a freshman, I didn't think it would be possible to finish ahead of half of those girls who have been competing in this tournament for years," said Hackbart, who hails from Bristol, Pa. "I knew I had to keep grinding, and not get into my own head. As long as I did that, I knew I would have a good shot."
Hackbart rolled games of 222, 234, 207, 199, 179 and 217 for a total of 1,258. Her total was second only to Webber's Taylor Bulthuis who finished with a 1,285 total. A total of five female bowlers from the Allentown sectional qualifier advanced.
"Our field had a lot of talented women, so Kelsey's second-place finish is phenomenal," said head coach Jody Fetterhoff. "Only five are eligible to qualify, so for her to make it we knew she had to put together a strong set. Kelsey had a great look in practice and just kept it going. Making it to nationals is hard enough, but to do it as a freshman is pretty remarkable."
