So Close

PHILADELPHIA - A Julijana Vojinovic 3-pointer as time expired did not fall as Saint Joseph's came away with a 60-58 victory on Wednesday night at Hagan Arena.

Amadea Szamosi led the Dukes (12-12, 5-6 A-10) with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Conor Richardson added 13 and Kadri-Ann Lass 11 off the bench. Vojinovic grabbed a team-high nine rebounds

Adashia Franklyn recorded game-highs with a double-double of 23 points and 16 rebounds for the Hawks (10-12, 7-3 A-10).

FIRST QUARTER
The Dukes' defense held Saint Joseph's scoreless until the 6:39 mark and limited the Hawks to 26.3 percent shooting for the quarter. Lass scored seven points off the bench to help Duquesne to an 18-10 lead. Franklyn had eight points and nine rebounds in the quarter for the Hawks.

SECOND QUARTER
Duquesne continued to hold the lead throughout the 2nd quarter. Chassidy Omogrosso's 3-pointer with 1:13 remaining was the final field goal of the half, as the Dukes took a 30-23 lead into the intermission.

THIRD QUARTER
Vojinovic's layup at 4:57 gave the Dukes their first double-digit lead of the game. This was followed by a Lass jumper which gave Duquesne their largest lead of the game at 40-28 with 4:15 remaining. SJU was able to cut the lead in half at the end of the quarter, down six at 47-41.

FOURTH QUARTER
The Hawks battled back to tie the contest at 49-49 with 6:04 left on a Amanda Fiorvanti layup. The game would remain close with four lead changes and three ties occuring. With the score deadlocked at 58-58, Jaryn Garner's jumper with 11 seconds to go was the game-winner.

COACH BURT QUOTES

"I'm proud of our effort tonight. We played well. Kadri gave us very good minutes and played with confidence."

Lass played 31 minutes off the bench, scored 11 and grabbed six rebounds.

"Shots were not falling for the guards tonight, even though we had good looks. We need to make those baskets."

Duquesne made 3-of-14 3-pointers (21 percent) and was 30-of-60 from the floor (38 percent)

"I'm a glass half full guy. And I would not trade our energy and effort tonight for anything. We battled. We are moving in a positive direction. We are playing much better, individually and as a team, each day. We will continue to grow from this and get better. There is going to be a lot more Duquesne women's basketball to play this year."

Duquesne hosts George Mason on Feb. 5th. The game will air nationally on the American Sports Network. Additionally, it is National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Tipoff is at 3:00 P.M.
