PITTSBURGH - A big 1st quarter set the pace as George Washington defeated Duquesne 75-40 on Sunday afternoon at the Palumbo Center.
Angela Staffileno led the Dukes with a season-high 12 points. Paige Cannon pulled down a career-high eight rebounds for the Dukes (7-8, 0-2 A-10).
Lexi Martins led all players with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Colonials (9-5, 2-0 A-10).
FIRST QUARTER
George Washington came out of the gates by making seven of their first 10 shots, building a 15-2 lead at the 5:09 mark. In that time, Duquesne had five turnovers on their first nine possessions. The Colonials' lead reached the 24-point mark after a Camila Tapias 3-pointer made the score 31-7 and capped a 13-0 run just before the buzzer.
SECOND QUARTER
The Dukes outscored the Colonials 13-10, holding GW to just one field goal in the final 5:09 -- a Mei-Lyn Bautista layup with seven seconds left that sent the game into halftime with George Washington leading 41-21.
THIRD QUARTER
Tapias' halfcourt shot as time expired ended an 18-0 GW run and extended their lead to a game-high 37 points to 61-24.
FOURTH QUARTER
Staffileno's layup at 5:30 gave the Dukes' their first double-figure score of the game.
UP NEXT
The Dukes hit the road to Philadelphia to face La Salle (8-4, 1-1 A-10) on Thursday at 7:00 PM. Duquesne returns home on Saturday to host Davidson (2-11, 0-1 A-10) at 2:00 PM.
