PITTSBURGH, PA - Freshman A.J. Hines rushed for 189 yards and two touchdowns and Wayne Capers had a career-high eight catches for 143 yards and a score as Duquesne came from behind to defeat visiting Dayton, 34-20 Saturday afternoon at Rooney Field. The 189 yards was the most by a DU freshman running back since Larry McCoy ran for 195 yards at Nicholls State on Sept. 12, 2009.

The Dukes improve to 2-1 on the season while the Flyers fall to 2-1. The Duquesne defense blanked Dayton in the second half and the Red and Blue offense outgained UD, 231-50 in the second frame.

An eventful first quarter was highlighted by 20 points, 248 yards, 13 penalties, a 59-yard run by a quarterback and a blocked kick to result in a 14-6 lead Dayton lead after just 15 minutes of play.

Dayton opened the scoring with a one-yard run by Jack Adams on the first drive of the game, making it 7-0 Flyers just 2:59 into the contest. Duquesne responded on its first drive as Dillon Buechel connected with Blair Roberts on a 13-yard touchdown strike. Austin Crimmins' kick was blocked, making it 7-6 Dayton at the 6:22 mark.

The Flyers found paydirt again as Alex Jenner scored from one yard out with 4:54 left in the quarter, making it 14-6 Dayton. The drive was highlighted by a 59-yard run by QB Alex Jeske to the Duquesne one yard line. Crimmins narrowed the DU deficit to 14-9 with a 32-yard field goal at the 12:28 mark of the second quarter, but Dayton's William Will hit field goals from 27 yards and 45 yards to make it 20-9 with 1:08 left in the half.

The Dukes ended the first half scoring though on a four-play, 65-yard drive capped off by a Hines 10-yard scoring run to make it 20-15. That play was set up by 35-yard completion from Buechel to Capers and a 20 yard run by Hines.

After nearly seven scoreless minutes of football to open the second half, linebacker Carter Henderson picked off a Flyer pass and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-20 Dukes, following a failed two-point conversion attempt. On the ensuing kickoff, Troy Gethers forced a fumble on the return, which was recovered by Justice Rawlins, giving Duquesne the ball at the Dayton 20.

On the next play, Buechel connected with Capers on a 20-yard scoring strike and after a blocked extra point attempt, it was Duquesne 27, Dayton 20 with 4:58 left in the third quarter. The only score of the fourth quarter came on a 37-yard touchdown run by Hines, making it 34-20 with 7:33 left in the contest.

Buechel finished the day 18-39 for 227 yards with two touchdowns and his first interception of the season. Roberts had four catches for 59 yards and a score and Riley Redman had nine carries for 63 yards.

Defensively, Christian Kuntz made a team-high nine tackles (5 solo), including three sacks for a loss of 15 yards and six tackles for a loss of 20 yards. He also added a forced fumble, a pass breakup and a QB hurry. Andy Struttmann was next in tackles with six (2 solo) while Daquan Worley picked off his first pass of the season. Nathan Stone had four stops (2 solo) and a sack of five yards.
